The beer and pizza orders were on their way. We were setting up poker chips and shuffling the cards. I was about to start dealing when Rachel's phone rang — and not five minutes later, she was screaming and jumping like a madwoman.
"Guys! Guess what, guess what, guess what!"
A few of the cards I'd been arranging flew out of my hands from the shock — just a little, mind you.
Chandler let out a tiny laugh and replied in the stupidest, yet somehow funniest way imaginable.
"Um, okay... the fifth dentist caved, and now they're all recommending Trident?"
Alright, that was funny. Not that I'd ever admit it aloud — my ego wouldn't allow such weakness. Rachel, however, was unimpressed.
"Nooo! The interview! She just called and she loved me! She absolutely loved me! And a bonus — we have the same taste in clothes, and I went camping with her cousin! Oh, and the job is perfect. I can do this. I can totally do this!"
Everyone was thrilled for her — from what I'd gathered, she's trying to figure herself out and stop depending on her dad's money. Mad, really, but fair play. Everyone wants independence; that's half the reason I'm here in the first place.
"I'm so proud of you — that's great! Let's play poker," Monica said, her tone flipping instantly from sentimental to competitive.
"Guys, now that I remember we talked about it — if you don't want to play, we completely understand," Joey started, gathering the cards I'd just finished arranging.
"Oh yes, yes, we could play some other game... like, I don't know... Pictionary?" Chandler suggested, smirking.
The guys ducked under the table dramatically, mocking the girls — well, the other girls. They don't know me yet.
