Chapter 1

Should've seen this coming from a mile away

Aug. 9 .1977

It was only the first day of school, walking through the halls of school holding his schedule looking at the order of classes bruce noticed a big group gathered around two students, all he could hear was loud screaming from a voice much louder than both the group and the other person involved in the fight, a voice he knew well since the voice was always screaming at something or someone. It was Vance Hopper, a student who was always known as a ticking time bomb that could go off any any minute, and clearing it was currently going off.

"The fuck you just say to me?" you could hear him yell at the other boy, Diego.
"I said nothing." The now nervous boy said, Which just pissed Vance off more.
"No, tell me what the fuck you just said." Vance pressed.
"I told you to not fucking push past me." The crowd gasped at the pride in what Diego had just said, clearly he was new to school and didn't know the force he was up against. Vance had reached his limit. He grabbed the boy by the side of his head and slammed it into the lockers they were standing by. Diego fell to the floor before grabbing onto Vance's legs pulling him down onto the floor with him.

The group of students watch, of course cheering for Vance, who was beating the shit out of the other boy. Bruce was always scared of Vance, for Obvious reasons.. Soon the other boy was passed out and laid on the floor. Vance was straddling the unconscious male before standing up wiping blood away from his lip with the palm of his hand. He turned around and left the boy, shoving himself through the crowd going to the school's bathroom. The students would rush to class, chatter passing around the crowd that had gotten to see the first Vance fight of the year. Bruce left after everyone else, watching two teachers help Diego up and take him to the office. Bruce walked to his first hour, his mom always told him not to get involved with violent kids because they'll only end up hurting you too. Bruce always took her advice. After an uneventful 1st hour, he made his way to his 2nd hour.

He looked around the class before the teacher had told him where to sit down. He walked to the desk and sat down, soon class started. Around 5 minutes into notes, the classroom door opened and the principal walked in with a bruised Vance. Vance has a split lip, bruised eye and he was now looking down, an annoyed look on his face.
"Vance's class had a last minute change and he'll be in your class until further notice." The principal said, the teacher walked over and gave a nervous smile.
"Oh.. Vance, you can sit next to bruce. Maybe he'll help you do better in class. Won't you bruce?" the teacher turned, giving a genuine smile to bruce. Bruce reluctantly nodded back.
"Totally." Bruce nodded.

Vance would shrug and sit down next to him. Bruce looked to Vance's hands, seeing his knuckles were bleeding from the fight.
"Need bandages?" bruce asked,
"I have some in my bag, I get hurt a lot from baseball practice." Bruce continued, trying to be friendly.
"I'm not a pussy." Vance said, looking back at Bruce with a stern face.
"It'll get infected. That'll hurt more than it does right now." Bruce informed him.
"Do you mind fucking off? Damn you talk too much." Vance said now annoyed with his new tablemate. Bruce let it go, going back to taking notes for the class. He glanced at Vance after notes, Vance hadn't written a single thing down.  He slowly slid his notes to Vance, who stared at him before taking the notes and copying them.

Bruce didn't take long to finish his math work. Vance scribbled out his work with pen. Before reaching over and taking Bruce's pencil. Bruce let him take it, and would turn around to talk to some friends that were sitting behind him. Soon work was collected and everyone went to their next classes. Bruce's next class had Finney, who was a boy who played on a team that his baseball team went up to bat with pretty often. They weren't close, but they were nice to each other.
