xiv : Street Chase!

The pair walked down an alley as Avery rambled about how Marcus needed to stay out of fights. "You're going to end up getting yourself killed one day," the girl stressed as the boy beside her rolled his eyes. "You worry too much," he ran his hand through his hair, "Plus would it really be that bad of a thing if I did get offed in some stupid fight?" "Yes," Avery yelled with widened eyes. She was shocked he would even think such a thing.

"You know people care about you right? I- I care about you!" Marcus shook his head. "It was a joke, Ave." It very much so was not a joke, but he didn't want to address that.

Avery scoffed in reply, "Next time you make a joke like that I'll make sure to be the one pushing you into the grave then." "Of course you will, Ave. You'll use all 4'3 inches of yourself to do so." "I'm not four feet tall," she glared.

"I'm 5'7," she added as an afterthought to prove her point. Marcus laughed, she stood right at his chin and had for the past five years he'd known her. In his eyes the girl was the definition of short. She thought otherwise of herself.

The conversation was cut short when Marcus bumped shoulders with someone. The boy turned and glared at whoever he walked into while getting ready to yell only for Avery to glare up at him. "Marcus," she sounded like she was warning a dog to not grab food off the table. He raised his hands in defense before his eyes wandered down to the ground and landed on what looked like a cigarette.

With a grin he lifted the small piece of paper and the brunette beside him immediately shook her head no. "It's probably laced with something!" He brought it to his lips nonetheless - and Avery being someone who agreed long ago that whatever he did she did - huffed and took it after he did.

She blinked a few times and reached out for his hand. Marcus quickly entwined their fingers as the girl looked around with a look of shock.

The world seemed to be in hyper focus, colors that shouldn't be there invading her vision while the boy beside her looked as out of it as her.

"Told you," she murmured while focused on not tripping over her feet as the pair started down the alley. "Yeah, yeah," Marcus waved her off before staring at an old television and tilting his head confused. "Hm?" Avery messed with the sleeve of his jacket as he backed away from the blank box.

"Somebody's following us," he whispered. Avery shook her head, "You're paranoid." "Am not." "Parade," she suddenly gasped, a child-like look taking over her features as she pulled the boy behind her.

"Avery- I'm telling you- Ok.." He smiled as she grinned at the chaos surrounding them.

"My dad used to let me sit on his shoulders during these things," she explained while Marcus chuckled. "I'm not putting you on my shoulders." The brunette laughed and continued walking down the street before she suddenly was anchored to the ground.

She turned to find Marcus talking to someone, the boy not seeming to understand a word he was told before Avery pointed at the cops making their way towards the pair. "Shit, Arguello." "Fuck," he gasped before taking off in a sprint.

His hand was still entwined in Avery's as the two ran down the street and swerved into a parking lot. "I hate you," she screeched as he pushed her in front of him.

Marcus refused to have the girl get taken because of him. If he knew one thing about the girl it was that she wouldn't fare well in prison. That and she usually left her shoelaces too loose so there was a possibility she would trip over them as she ran. So he decided it would be best to have her in front.

"No you don't," he argued as they swiftly turned a corner. "For the next minute I do," the girl huffed as she came upon a dead end. However, before she could start complaining at said dead end the sound of a motorcycle was heard. "Get on."

The girl sitting upon the bike was around the duo's age with short black hair and about a million tattoos. She reminded Avery of those people her parents would warn her not to talk to.

"Just-" Before the stranger could continue to yell at them to go with her the sound of cops yelling was heard. "Put your hands up!" Avery watched wide eyed as the girl obliged. Just as the handcuffs were about to be put on her she attacked the man, hitting him as he stumbled back.

"Holy-" Avery turned around confused when Marcus tugged her backwards and tried scrambling away from the scene. "What-" A scream left the girl's throat when a bag was put over her head. The last thing she heard was Marcus yelling.

"Leave her alone!"
