It was a summer in Brasil hot and suffocating. But I loved it. Don't get me wrong I missed Portugal with all my heart but being here with Vovô (grandpa) was the best time of my life. Brasil was exciting with all the food, streets and people but the best thing was the fútbol. Kids my age would go run and play in the streets or in big fields of grass. Yeah the fútbol was definitely the best part. Maybe even more than him.
I would run out and play with the kids there were rarely any girls but I didn't mind. The first time I came though the boys were jerks.
I had already been in Brasil for a week and I was getting claustrophobic staying in at the house. As any 11 year old would. In my defense I didn't sneak out it was just going out without asking for permission. I ran around the streets of Brasil with an old fútbol my Vovô had. I was dribbling with it and getting ready for a solid shoot but it went to fast and too far. It hit some skinny boy in the head. "Oops" I thought about pretending it wasn't me but I wanted my ball back. The boy looked around and we made eye contact. " Hey! Was that you?" I looked down and back up the boy may have been skinny but I was sure he was older than me. This was a poor town and not all kids here were good news maybe I should've never left home. But obviously I couldn't keep my mouth shut. " Yeah don't be so surprised. Could you just give me my ball back." At this point all the boys were looking at me up a down some were around my age but others were defined older. "I mean you kicked it at me I think you have to come get it." He smiled and me with light of laughter in his eyes. He was enjoying this. Well if he wanted me to get it back I would. I walked closer about ready to wrestle him for it if I had to. " C'mon Neymar just give it back to the little girl you'll crush her." Another one of the boys said shaking his head. I couldn't believe he just said that as if I didn't know how to fight for a ball because I was a girl. I looked Neymar straight in the eyes and said, " 1 v 1. You versus me whoever scores first keeps the ball." He seemed surprised but I knew he wouldn't back down. " You sure you went to do this?" He asked me he almost seemed genuinely concerned. The boys snickered. But I stayed firm despite being a tad bit scared. "Yes." Ok maybe I was terrified. " Alright then don't say I didn't warn you" he shrugged and put the ball at his feet. He juggled it from one foot to the other before hitting it with his head and setting it between us. Show off. " 3 2 1 go." Yelled one of the boys. I ran for the ball and so did the boy, Neymar. I got to it first which I could tell surprised him but he wasn't deterred. He took it from me but I wasn't giving up either. Just as he was getting closer to goal I ran faster and took it from under his feet. I dribbled it as fast as I could and shot at the goal a solid kick. But Neymar had gotten infront and headed it out of bounds. I simply stared at the goal and I had to admit defeat. Neymar came up to me with the ball. " That was a good game. Your good I'll give it to you, here you can have your ball back too. It's not like I won either." He scratched the back of his head and shrugged. I was surprised but grateful. "Thank you." I looked up at him and realized his eyes had specks of green in them, he was actually kinda cute "Yeah course hey you can also come play with us if you want. We won't go easy on you though." I smiled at him. " Sounds perfect."
Ever since that day I played with the boys and made some good friends. Me and Neymar went to the beach and ran around the neighborhoods, he always looked at for me. But by the end of those 2 months it was time to say goodbye. I never saw Neymar again. Please comment on what you'd like to see next!
