I walked outside of the orphanage into the blazing, hot sun with my best friend, Kevin, right behind me we were both wearing a black tanks. I walked gracefully across the dead, brown, scorched grass while Kevin stumbled over to the graffiti covered brick wall that surrounded the orphanage. I took out my red spray paint, shook it, took the cap off, and started spraying over my older 'art work'. Kevin pulled out his purple spray paint and did the same. We were just getting the first letter finished when a voice distracted us.
"ALLISON!! KEVIN!! WHAT DO YOU THINK YOUR DOING!!!!"
There was no mistaking that high, squeaky, annoying voice that strains to have a tone of authority, it's the queen of all witches, Meridith, the owner of the orphanage. I turned around rolling my eyes.
"What does it look like we're doing?", said with a 'duh' tone to my voice.
She glared at me, "Something you’re not supposed to be doing."
Kevin grinned, "Then we are doing what we're supposed to be doing."
I fake smiled at her and turned back around and continued to work on my 'art'. There's nothing scary about her. She says she's 53 years old, but her wrinkles say other words and she's 4 feet tall, and getting shorter.
She scoffed, "Excuse me, young man!"
"Your excused.", I say not turning around.
She humpfed and spun on her heels and stormed back to the orphanage. Kevin turned to me and smiled one of his gorgeous smiles. The thing is, I've always kinda liked him as more than a friend. I mean, he was the only one who understood me. I smiled back.
"Nice one!", I said to him.
We high fived each other.
"Not too bad yourself.", Kevin said while winking at me.
I fought the blush tha was creeping up and masked it like I always did, "Well we shouldn't be too rusty. We only just did the same thing yesterday."
We laughed and then something caught his eye behind me.
"What is it?"
I turned around to see what he was staring at and a few feet in front of us was a black and neon green panda taking tiny steps towards the wall and it was talking to itself.
"I guess I should be getting back. I've caused enough chaos today."
And just like that, it hopped into the wall. It left a ripple in the spot that it jumped into. I just stared dumbfounded.
"What was that?", Kevin asked.
I shrugged. I didn't know what to say to that. He walked over to the wall and squatted to get a better look. I squatted next to him and reached my hand out to it. Kevin grabbed my wrist before I could reach it.
“What are you doing?”
“I wonder what will happen if I try to go…”
“ALLIE, KEV, there you are.”
We stand up and turn around at the same time to see a little boy about 12 or 11 running towards us. Kevin looked at me and I looked at him.
“You were looking for us?”
“Yea, there's a fight on the courtyard.”
Kevin looks at me and gives me a look asking 'do you wanna go'. I shook my head.
He shakes his head, “I think we'll pass.”
The boy shrugged and ran back off. Me and Kevin grabbed our cans of paint and started walking back to the main building.
“Why didn't you want to go see the fight?”, Kevin asked me.
“I wanna find out what happened back there. I'm going back tonight to check it out.”
“Okay. I'm coming with you.”
“Of course you are,” I say rolling my eyes, “ I'll come by your room at 12, okay.”
“Okie dokie.”
We went our separate ways to our rooms. I took a nap so I would have enough energy for tonight.
