Life is unfair.
It always has been. That's why you've always used video games as an escape from reality. In recent years, technology has been advancing far beyond everyone's expectations. Virtual reality headsets have advanced into being able to simulate a whole new life. That's what you wanted: a new life.
You placed the newly bought headset onto your head, took a deep breath, and powered it on. The set up for the headset was relatively easy, but to be fair, you were experienced with computers and gaming consoles alike.
You quickly downloaded the brand new MMORPG that just recently came out. Blade's Edge is a highly anticipated roleplaying game that allows players to do whatever they want essentially. If you want to live a quiet lifestyle on a farm, you can. If you want to wreak havoc on a server and kill everyone, you can. If you want to be a noble hero, you can. The possibilities are endless.
Upon booting online to the game, you chose to have the game replicate what you look like in real life. You didn't care too much for cosmetics. You just wanted to have fun. You finished the tutorial rather quickly, and before you knew it, you were thrown into the server with other players.
The headset was equipped with microphones, so everyone in the game talked to each other, rather than typing into a chat box. Thankfully, the game was equipped with proximity chat, so you weren't subjected to everyone's conversations. You weren't much of a talker.
You grabbed some basic loot that was given to you by the game developers, and you set off on your first quest: build a shelter.
After quite some time of gathering materials and building a very basic structure, you decided it was time to find something to eat. Equipped with your sword, you began hunting a wild boar in a heavily wooded area. However, while you were crouched behind a rock, waiting for the boar to turn it's back to you, an arrow suddenly shot through it's head. It collapsed to the ground, instantly dying.
"Nice!" A young man with brown hair cheered as he walked up to the boar from the opposite direction you were in.
You sighed heavily and stood up. You were looking forward to enjoying that boar. "Nice kill." You said as smiled politely at the stranger.
"Oh," He said as he looked up at you. "I'm sorry. I didn't know anyone else was around here." He scratched the back of his neck awkwardly. "We can split it?" He offered.
"Ah..." You thought about it for a moment. You didn't normally like to interact with others while you were playing a video game. You looked up at the sky as the sun was beginning to set. Your hunger bar was also dangerously low. "I'd like that a lot. Thank you... I'm sorry. I never caught your name." You walked over to the young man and extended your hand for a handshake.
"My name is Eren. What's your name?" He took your hand and shook it firmly before dragging the dead boar through the woods.
"It's Y/N. I have a base where we can prepare that boar if you'd like." You said as you grabbed the front end of the boar to help Eren drag it through the woods.
"Sure, that'd be useful. Do you mind if I invite my friends? I promised them dinner as well." He said with a cheeky grin.
"I don't mind." You shrugged. You knew that inviting more people to your base was a risk, but since you didn't really have much to lose, you weren't being too cautious. What were they going to kill you for? Your basic sword and shield?
Eventually, Eren and his two friends, Armin and Mikasa, were over at your rudimentary base. You all enjoyed dinner together, and you got to know the three of them. Surprisingly, you all got along well. It was a nice time.
