Drilling a hole in the ground. Finding a corpse on a fishing boat. Fighting a shark to protect his comrades. Confiding in the child. Betraying the child. Returning the child. Thanking the child. Returning the child. Returning the child's wallet.

The child rose suddenly. A small girl stepped out from behind a rock. Barbara studied her for a moment before wiping away a tear. The child walked forward, brushing past several corpses and lifting a woman's purse. From beneath the chest, Barbara could see the yellow of the wallet. With a sigh, Barbara returned to the doorway and stepped inside."Sorry, I can't take that." The wanderer leaned back to look for a wall to hide behind, but found nothing. It was just an empty hallway.

Barbara searched again for a hiding place. The child paused just inside the doorway. Barbara didn't know where to stand or where to go. She turned around and leaned against the wall."Excuse me, I need to go," she spoke softly, "I'm looking for Yae-Miko.""Are you sure you want to find her?" Wanderer said before going elsewhere. Barbara looked around and saw Childe and Itto played Genius Invocation TCG. Dainsleif went on his regular edgy abyss talk while Aether tried to jump off of a roof from boredom. Wanderer was being a sassy little shit to Razor, meanwhile Venti and Zhongli tried to arrest Yae-Miko. Barbara didn't want to see her upset anymore than she already was.

She stumbled through a door and then disappeared. Barbara walked over to the card game. The children gathered around a gaming console, but they weren't really playing it. Their shoulders slumped with exhaustion. One of the children walked over. Barbara watched as the child read from a black book. The pages flipped by quickly.Childe picked up a card and read from the book, "Aether." Childe watched with a sad expression.Childe set the card down and pointed at the child's face. "Venti. Your ID card is going to expire in five minutes. Take it. Do not forget."The child smiled weakly and took the card. With a smile, the child handed the card to Barbara."Thank you." Barbara walked away as Venti slowly approached the card game. The child didn't seem angry, but Barbara could still hear anger in her voice."How long has it been?"A child started to sing. The song was strange and dissonant. It didn't take long for the words to fade away."Barbara. Is that you? Where have you been?" Childe said with a face covered with scar tissue.Barbara looked at Childe. The rest of the children were staring at the wanderer.

 "What? I just moved here."

"You haven't had time to get your wallet out of the house. Barbara. Yae-Miko is missing. Yae-Miko was supposed to go with you."Barbara shook her head. "What do you mean? I thought she had already left."Childe appeared confused for a moment before remembering the child with her. She knelt down and lifted the child into her arms. The child didn't complain or protest. With a smile, Childe held the child close.

"You weren't supposed to stay away so long. Now we can never find her. We should have killed you like you were supposed to."

Barbara placed a hand on Childe's shoulder and nodded.

"That's not true. You should have killed me, too. I should have found that person when I had the chance. I'm sorry I failed. I'm so sorry."

Childe placed the child back on the floor. With anger, Childe said, "You're a useless fucking child. Where did you come from? You don't know what it's like to feel lost. You have no fucking idea how the Aether changes people. If you had been here more, you would have found Yae-Miko."Venti started to cry, "No, Yae-Miko wouldn't be doing this if it wasn't for you. She didn't kill herself. She was running away because she was lost. We were chasing her. She was wandering around and ran into a tree and got hurt. She's been running around in circles for weeks."Barbara wanted to scream and cry. But she didn't. She did cry, but she only let it out quietly. What she was feeling made her sick. She wouldn't let the child know how scared she was. If she did, the child would be worse than Yae-Miko."Do you know what to do, Childe? Do you know how to find her?"

Childe laughed, "No, I don't. All I can do is leave. I don't care anymore. I have to go. I have to find a new home. I can't leave. Yae-Miko will be upset. She will make a fuss."Childe placed the child back on the ground. With anger, Childe said, "Barbara, I have a deal for you. I give you this child. I will give you one thousand Mora and tell you where the girl is. You're never to come back to this place. I'm sure Yae-Miko will appreciate that."Barbara looked at Childe. She realized she didn't have a choice. "Thank you. Thank you so much. This is something I'll never forget. I'll never forget the kindness and the worry you've shown me."Childe shrugged. "If you wish." With the wanderer and the child sitting in a corner, Childe looked around the room. With her thoughts focused, she quickly realized how horrible the whole place was. With a frown, she said, "You really have been doing it all wrong."She got up from the chair and walked over to the child. "Yae-Miko, this is Barbara. She's the woman that you meet in the hallway. Barbara can tell you a lot about me. But it's best if you don't know much about the Aether. If you did, you wouldn't be afraid of losing your powers. You wouldn't be afraid to feel again."

Barbara placed a hand on the child's shoulder. "You have nothing to fear from me. I won't tell anyone. I won't let anyone hurt you. Just like you won't hurt me. I'll do whatever it is you ask me. Just tell me where you're going."With a smile, Barbara held the child and said, "You'll have to come with me for now. You must go with Childe. I'll explain everything when we get there. Don't worry. I'll take care of you. I'll see you again."She held the child's face in her hands. "It's only a matter of time before you have your own child to care for. The child won't be as tough as you. But he will be smart. He'll learn to use his powers. Like I did. You have to let him go now, child. You must let him be like me. Like I was. You must let him be free."With a smile, the child looked into Barbara's eyes. He pulled away, and looked away from the stranger. He said, "I don't want to go with you. I want to go with Childe. I don't want you to give me away."Barbara's smile fell. She looked away and said, "I have to. Childe knows where the girl is. She has been telling me everything. Why do you think you couldn't find her?"Yae-Miko spoke up. "Childe, I'll go with Childe. Let me stay here and I'll be good. I promise."
