CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

Trickle of Memories

LAXUS GATHERS A fistful of the duvet in his hand watching as the silky material slips through his fingertips. A sense of familiarity washes over his entire being as his eyes begin to glaze over. Within seconds he finds himself tumbling through his own memories, trying to catch his breath as they hit him hard and fast.

It was just another boring gala, Laxus would have preferred to be anywhere but here. That was until he saw her. The moment she appeared within his line of vision he felt something warm pool in his stomach. He could've easily blamed it on the liquor but he knew better. This woman was meant to be in his life, he could feel it deep in his bones.

He makes his way across the crowded ballroom floor feeling his heart hammer in his chest with every step he takes. She isn't paying attention to her surroundings when he finally comes to lean against the wall beside her. After a moment she looks up at him and her jaw drops slightly.

"You don't want to be here either, hm?" He asks, glancing down at her. When their eyes connect he feels his heartbeat slow, it's as if the raging river in his chest had become a still lake. Almost like the final piece was slotted into the puzzle.

After a few moments of idle chit-chat, he invites her to the gardens; and that's the night he realizes it. He met the love of his life.

Laxus struggles as memories from various lifetimes flash through his mind. One moment he was marrying Nova and ruling Haven at her side then the next he's a hunter who falls for a florist with healing abilities. He witnesses different lifetimes he lives out at Nova's side, and true to his words, he falls in love with her again and again.

He finally arrives at his last memory before his current lifetime.

It's the era of dragons; he's barely twenty-three and celebrating his five-year anniversary with Nova. Everything happens so fast; one moment they're sitting together watching the sunset on a grassy hill, and the next he's lying on the ground with a hole in his chest.

He stares up at Nova with half-slit eyes, and the world around him begins to slow. "I promised that I would love you in every life we live. This isn't the last," Memories flash before his eyes quickly as he bleeds out in his lover's arms.

Nova's lips tremble as she looks at him, tears falling down her chin. "I love you," Her voice cracks, "I promise I'll wait for you."

The world begins to fade away for him; until suddenly he's witnessing the scene outside of his own body. He watches as Nova screams into his chest, a visible choppy white aura explodes around her body. The wind begins to howl, mixing in with her cries of anguish. She slowly lifts herself up and looks around the open field. Her eyes are filled with malicious intent as she searches for the culprit, fat crocodile tears still sliding down her rosy cheeks.

"Show yourself, Mortem." Her tone is biting, "You made the mistake of not taking us both out." She continues as she stalks around the area searching for the God of Death. "You didn't count on his death reawakening me, did you?"

She whips her head around and stomps her left foot into the ground; a ripple of earth spikes shoots towards empty air. A shout emits from the air before it shimmers to reveal Mortem looking rather displeased.

"It's been millennia, Nova." Mortem says as he begins walking towards her. "Why can't you just come back already?"

She glares at him, "I'm never going back to you."
