appearance:
kyoko is a very slender, curvy woman. it's noted that the navy blue isn't her real hair color, as it's dyed. her hair, if out of it's ponytail, can go to her thighs, but typically she keeps it in a high ponytail so it rests at her waist. her bangs are wavy and go to the left side of her face, and she has two strands of hair that frame her face and rest by her shoulders. her typical outfit is a tight, turtle neck sweater tucked into a pair of shorts, accompanied with fishnet leggings and combat boots. she usually can be seen with a pair of sunglasses on top of her head when she's out and about.

personality:
while she has a resting bitch face, kyoko is one of the more sociable people among the league of villains. she's very skilled at reading people, and isn't afraid to tease people or be sarcastic. she can be seen as confident, or to certain people cocky, and isn't afraid to verbally assault people. she's fairly approachable and can make friends with people quickly, however if she decides she doesn't like you she can be cold and distant.

backstory:
kyoko was the first born child of chiharu and tarou maruyama. however, her father struggled with alcohol addiction, and as a result was very abusive towards her mother and herself. her mother became her saving point, the two having a very close bond and seeking comfort with one another. when her quirk developed at 6 years old, her father was dismissive of it, but her mother was fascinated with how pretty her quirk was. kyoko would create crystals for her mom if she was having a bad day, and began to make bracelets from them with whatever she could find. her mom started a collection of them, and kyoko felt loved by her mom. kyoko would question why they didn't leave her father if he was a bad person, and chiharu explained that he made all the money, and they would have nowhere to go if she did leave him.

as a child, she was very outgoing, and at school became friends with toya todoroki. she found friendship with him, as the two were the same age. while they never went to one another's house, they quickly bonded and became friends, taking interest in one another's quirks. she made him a bracelet as well at some point, and he kept it on him at all times at school.
when kyoko was 9, her sister kotoko was born. kotoko became kyoko's number one priority, as she thought her sister was the most precious thing to her. kotoko was born quirkless, which furthered kyoko's idea of protecting her. tarou was only getting worse and worse, hitting chiharu and kyoko more and more. kyoko would show up to school with bruises or marks from beer bottles being thrown at her, and would simply lie to the teachers and toya about where she'd gotten them from.

however, when kyoko was 11 and kotoko was only 2, tarou drunkenly attempted to strike the toddler, however kyoko intercepted him and the two proceeded to get into a physical altercation while chiharu held her toddler, feeling useless about what had happened as she cried, kyoko beaten pretty badly that night. when kyoko went to school the next morning, the teachers didn't believe the lie that she had 'fallen off her bike' that day, and explained to her that if they told her who hurt her, the police would take them away and she would be safe. this seemed like the best option to her, as she wanted her mother and sister to be protected, so she admitted to the teachers what had been happening to her. the teachers reported the abuse to the police, and that day kyoko talked to toya as well. she explained that she felt something really bad was about to happen, and he didn't seem to understand what she was talking about. she dismissed it as nothing, and he went home that day with the promise of seeing her tomorrow.

after spending a majority of her day talking to the cops and informing them of the abuse, she'd been sitting in the principle's office waiting for a bit when some cops came in, looking agitated. they began reprimanding her, saying that it wasn't funny to make up a big lie like this. kyoko was confused and attempted to explain that she wasn't lying, but the cops explained that her mother told the cops that kyoko liked to tell lies sometimes, and that there was no abuse going on in the home. kyoko didn't understand why her mother would lie like that, and the cops said she needed to go home now. when she walked home, the minute she stepped in the door her father began hitting her. he yelled at her, telling her she was an idiot for trying to get him in trouble. chiharu sat in the corner, holding kotoko while crying and feeling guilty. her husband had threatened her into saying nothing was going on, so she unwillingly lied to the police.

kyoko was angry. she was mad at the cops for not being smart enough to see her mother was lying, she was mad at her mother for lying, and she was mad at her father for being the way he was. in a fit of anger, kyoko activated her quirk and formed a giant crystal, stabbing it through her father's chest. she didn't seem to realize what she'd done as her mother screamed, her father dying from being impaled on the piece of crystal. when kyoko came to her senses, she went to her mother for reassurance, but instead was yelled at to get out of the house. chiharu feared her daughter would be jailed, and instead told her to get out and run away before someone found out. kyoko, confused by why her mother was being so cold to her, yelled that she hated her before bolting out of the house, with no shoes or anything.

afterwards, she abandoned her name and previous identity, resorting to becoming a villain and turning her back on the society that didn't notice her pain. she dyed her hair from the previous blonde to navy blue, and went by lazuli instead of kyoko. she joined the league a while before dabi and toga.
