I woke up in sweat, from yet another sleepless night. The voices, they buzz in the back of my head. Giving me a massive headache.
"Geez, you'd think the dead would be quiet", I say quietly to myself, while I rub my temples gently.
I stand and stretch my sore back, looking around the room. Looks like my roomie beat me to the bathroom.
I groan, still tired and sore from lack of sleep. I grab my crumbled uniform off my desk and dress quickly. The last thing I needed was detention with Miss Thornhill for being late, something about her just didn't sit right with me.
"Come on Mads! I need to get ready too!" I shouted as I pounded on the door. Mads was short for Madison, aka my roommate.
The door swung open and Madison walked out, "The bathrooms all yours" she said in a sarcastic, annoyed tone.
"Thanks" I replied back with a sly smile.
I took my time getting ready, making sure I smelled and looked good. That day I had fencing, and there was a certain boy that I wanted to impress.
"Ready!" I came out of the bathroom, a smile on my face.
"Finally. Let's go!"
Mads rushed me through the school, where we met up with Enid and another girl, dressed completely in black, in the quad.
"Hey Enid! And girl I've never met before," I say, turning towards the girl in black. She said nothing, only stared at the two of us.
"Y/N, Madison, this is Wednesday Addams" Enid said excitedly, gesturing towards the girl. "She's my new roommate!" Enid continued.
Mads and I nodded, "Well hello Wednesday, it's very nice to meet you." Mads stuck out her hand, but again, Wednesday only continued to stare.
"She's not much of a talker" Enid chimed in.
"I see that," Said Madison, pulling her hand back.
"Well I was just telling Wednesday about all the different outcasts here at Nevermore," Enid said, looking around.
"And what are they?" Wednesday turned, looking directly at Madison and I.
"Oh well, Madison has the power to look into the future and the past on command, as well as freezing time." Enid looked towards Mads and she talked.
"And what about this one," Wednesday looked directly at me, "Y/N, is it?"
"Oh well, Y/N doesn't really like to talk about her power-" I interrupted her.
"It's fine Enid," I looked at Wednesday, "I'm a Medium, meaning-"
"Meaning you can talk to the dead." Wednesday stated, "I don't see why you wouldn't want to talk about it, your powers are much more interesting than most others."
I smiled. That was sort of a compliment, right? "Thanks Wednesday, not many people would agree with you."
"Then they are wrong." She said flatly. Before I could say more, she turned and began to walk away. Enid said a quick goodbye and hurried to catch up with her.
We watched them walk away, then turned and began walking away ourselves. "I like her." I stated.
"Uhm, excuse me? I think your power is cool too!" Mads began.
"And I like you too." I assured her.
She nodded and smiled. Her phone buzzed, drawing her attention away from me. "Oh uh, I have to get going." she quickly started walking away.
"Wait! Where are you going?!" I called to her.
"I'll tell you later! Bye!" her walk turned into a run and she was gone.
"Unbelievable.." I mutter.—---------------------------
I was fencing with Anna Barcley, her onion breath seeping through her mask, almost making it impossible to focus. We finally stop for a break, and I head over to the side where I drink my water and stretch my legs. Out of the side of my eye, I notice Wednesday walking in, wearing all black fencing gear. She walks through the middle of the room, before stopping in front of the mat that Rowan and Bianca were at.
Just then Rowan hits the ground hard, "Coach, Coach, She tripped me!" He referred to Bianca.
"It was a clean strike, Rowan" Coach reassures him.
"Maybe if you whined less and practiced more than you wouldn't suck." I rolled my eyes behind my mask, wishing I could slap the bitch out of her. If that was even possible.
Rowan looked defeated, he stood and grabbed his glasses from Coach before coming and standing next to me. Almost shoulder to shoulder.
"Seriously Coach, when am I gonna get real competition? Anyone else wanna challenge me?"
"I do" Wednesday spoke up.
Bianca turned, a skeptical look on her face, "Oh, you must be the psychopath that they let in."
"You must be the self-appointed queen bee. Interesting thing about bees. Pull out their stingers, they drop dead."
The smile dropped off Bianca's face, "Rowan doesn't need you to come to his defense. He's not helpless, he's lazy."
"Are we doing this or not?"
They go to their positions and begin, "En Guarde" Coach calls. The two begin, the sound of struggle and the clack of swords continue to fill the air.
"Point to Wednesday." Coach calls.
I smile, feeling Bianca's annoyance radiate from where I stood.
Again, they begin. This time Bianca scores, "The score is even."
The two take off their masks, "Clearly that first point was beginner's luck." she says smugly, "Let's finish this."
Wednesday doesn't respond, instead walks to Coach "For the final point, I would like to invoke a military challenge. No masks. No tips," she stops, standing next to Coach, "Winner draws first blood."
I raise my eyebrow, this could go either way. The others stop what they were doing, they all wanted to see how this would go.
"It's your decision, Bianca." Coach says, looking to her.
She looks to Coach, before turning her attention to Wednesday. Bianca steps closer, everyone was watching her now.
"Let's see if you bleed in black and white."
I set down my water bottle and walk over to Rowan. Standing almost shoulder to shoulder with him. "So who do you think will win?" I ask quietly, looking at him. He thinks for a second, "Bianca." he replies, he turns to look at me. For a second, nothing else mattered. His eyes dazzled, his hair sat perfectly, and he smelled like the salty scent of sweat and that cologne that I loved so much.
But then our attention was turned back to the fight at hand.
Bianca and Wednesday flung at each other, swords flying. They skillfully dodged each other while planning their next hit, until Wednesday couldn't keep up. Bianca swung her sword and slashed Wednesday, right above her left eyebrow.
"Your face finally got the splash of color it so desperately needed." Bianca chuckles, before turning and walking away.
Coach dismisses us and we all pack up and make our way out, one by one.
I walk up to Rowan and tap him on his shoulder, "So I was thinking, since you and I aren't the best at fencing then maybe we could meet up and practice sometime?"
He smiles a shy smile, "I'd like that."
I smile back, starting to feel like color spread on my cheeks. "Great," I pull a marker from my bag, I grab Rowan's arm and roll up his sleeve. His skin was so soft and warm. "What are you doing?" He asks, a slight nervousness in his voice.
I look into his eyes, "You can't text me without my number." He nods, and I uncap the marker and write my number from memory. Once I finish, I gently blow on his arm. To help the ink dry faster.
His breath hitched, and we made eye contact. I could feel the heat on my cheeks and could see the red covering his.
"I'll see you later." I smiled, and grabbed my bag before hurrying out of there.
My cheeks burned, the realization of what I just did sunk in. I pulled out my phone and started rapidly texting Madison, she would not believe what just happened.
