Your alarm woke you up way before you actually wanted to, cursing you grabbed your phone to silence it, but it was actually your boss trying to call you. Being the good little worker you were and not wanting to disappoint your boss, you answered already knowing what was going to be asked.
"Suki called out sick, I need you to come in." You sighed a big long sigh. It was your birthday and this is what you wanted least. You just landed an entry-level job that would lead to your dream career, and your boyfriend Jake warned you that things like this would happen and that you'd have to comply even if you didn't want to. You cursed him for always being right, but today just wasn't the day you felt like working. Jake had teased you about planning so many special things for today last week and now you can't do any of that stuff.
You sighed again, "Fine... I'll be there in 20."
"You're the best," Your manager said and hung up. You rolled your eyes and got up to get dressed, trying to do your hair as best as you could and your makeup all in ten minutes. You grabbed an apple and went out the door, wanting to catch the bus as fast as you could. You sat on the bus and went on your phone, your parents had already wished you a happy birthday, it was really early so you figured all of your friends were still asleep. You listened to music and waited for your stop, trying not to doze off.
The bus came to a halt and you opened your eyes and got up to exit the bus, the person in front of you wasn't going fast enough, causing you to trip on the last step and fall down to the concrete of the street, you almost cried but the person behind you helped you up and asked if you were okay. You thanked them and brushed it off, believing the day would only go up from there. You took a couple of steps towards your building and felt that your left earbud had fallen out, you took a deep breath and went back to the bus stop to see if it was somewhere on the ground. You walked around and kept your head down trying to see it, but as the sun kept rising more and more feet showed up, and everyone was on their way to work, it was no use. "Shit" you cursed out loud, the morning already testing your patience. You walked to your work building and opened the door, with your manager already there to greet you.
Before you could even tell her hi she was bombarding you with things that were definitely out of your pay grade, the person who had called in was a higher-up and had a lot of responsibilities. You sighed, mentally preparing yourself for what is to come. Right when you finished one task you were asked to do another and you wondered why this person called out, it was too much work. You didn't have enough time to check your phone to see if any of your friends sent you any birthday wishes, some of your co-workers in passing had and felt bad that you had gotten called in on your special day.
After a couple of hours of non-stop working, it was finally time for your thirty-minute lunch break. You ran to the coffee shop next door and waited in line for what seemed like forever, you checked your phone and only a couple of your friends had wished you a happy birthday, you frowned when you noticed that Jake hasn't even said anything. You tried not to get too much in your head, wondering if he forgot and worse, that he didn't love you anymore. You pushed the thought to the back of your head, maybe he also got called into doing something for work and was just as busy as you, if not busier. When it was finally your turn you put your phone back into your pocket and ordered as fast you could, your favorite coffee with a blueberry muffin, also your favorite.
After waiting and watching everyone else get their drinks and snacks your name was finally called, you grabbed everything and said thank you to the barista. You noticed that your blueberry muffin wasn't toasted like you'd asked, waving to the barista to kindly ask them to toast your muffin, but you were ignored. Understandably it was really busy, feeling defeated you left the shop and walked back to work, and of course, the universe wasn't done. Your coworker from earlier was leaving the building just as you were about to enter, the door coming up and hitting the coffee right out of your hand, and went all over your shoes.
