"Have a good day at school." my mom yelled as she rummaged through the house unpacking.

Today was my first day at my new school since our big move. I'm originally from Kenshaw Heights, which is not a place you want to be. Where i grew up, wasnt the best, losing my childhood best friend to gang violence, and on top that having to endure my abusive dad. Since me and my sister are coming of age my mom decided that it'd be best to have a new change in a new environment so we moved to a small town in South Carolina.

"Harper are you ready?" I yelled as she was taking to long. It was my first day and I be definitely did not want to be late.

Harper comes stomping downstairs, "bye daddy!", she kissed his cheek and grabbed her bookbag. As i was ready to walk out the door, I was stopped by his gruff voice.

"Nova .... make sure you come straight home after school, you understand?" he spoke loud with aggressiveness.

I shuttered and mumbled a quick yes sir, giving my mom a worried stare, grabbing harpers hand. We walked outside to my beat up old 2009 volkswagen beetle, yeah she's old but she's all i got. Letting the car warm up i let my thoughts take over.

I wish my mom would gain some god damn balls and leave that man for once and for all. He's been like this for years and he still aint changing. I feel no empathy for my mother when he beats her. Why? because she has no empathy when he beats me. Always choosing him over me, but im 18 and i'll be gone soon.

"Nova, come on! I'm going to be late!", Harpers annoying voice whines, cutting me out of my train of thoughts.

"Girl hush, it's only elementary school", I said. She never know when to shut up, always loud for no reason and its already early! I eventually cleared my head and started to back out the driveway, as I started driving out my neighborhood I turned on Jupiters diary by my favorite artist Rod wave. Harper and me immediately tuned in together singing the song, this was one of her favorites mines as well.

Maybe fifteen minutes later we ended up pulling into the parking lot of lowndes elementary, Harper's school. As I reached to turn down the radio she immediately gasped "Nova is this my school it's so bigggg!!" I shot her a smile and nodded it's not like anything we had back home in Chicago everything is so much better.

Harper being her usual excited self jumps out the car without looking. A 2 door bmw, quickly halts .. stepping on their breaks hard.

"Harper!" I yelled, heart dropping. To my surprise she had completely flicked the person off. This damn girl ... grabbing her hand and about to go apologize. the car just sped off, leaving behind nothing but exhaust.

"Rude", I mutter to myself, as i turn towards Harper.

"Don't you ever do something so damn stupid again!" I yell at her.

"Don't cuss at me or im going to tell my daddy!" she said, like the spoiled brat she is. I scoffed.

"Girl whatever, come on", I said tugging her.

I started my car and sped off, now playing FNF by glorilla. It was warm outside this early in the morning.

"Why the fuck is it so damn hot in the south?" I muttered to myself completely in a daze.

I let my window down, beginning my journey to the new school, Evergreen high school. The school was basically in the middle of no where, so I had a long while before i got there.

Im going about 50 mph until I hear this noise and my car starts slowing down on its on. Come on now, not today. Please don't let this be the day my car wants to stop in the middle of no where.

Before I knew it, I was on the side of the road, arms crossed. I was still about another 15 minutes from school. Cussing under my breath, I quickly take the time to text my father cause I don't want to hear his mouth later on.

                                         my car broke down and im on the side of the road -

dad: did you ever go get that oil change before we left kenshaw? -

"Shit", I muttered to myself.

                                          i forgot -

dad: well, how about you walk your forgetting ass to that school. i'll pick it up later on. -

What the fuck. He want me to walk? In this heat? He got me fucked all the way up. I smacked my lips, walking to the hood of the car, lifting it up. I dont know what the hell im doing, but im not walking to that damn school. Maybe about 5 minutes later, I seen an all black car slowing down. Lord please dont let this be the day I get snatched up by some random, please.

By now the car had completely stopped, I had then recognized that was the car that sped off earlier. Aw hell. The window coming down and fine looking white boy popped his head out. Let me not get ahead of myself but whew.

"Aye, you need some help?" he said yelling as if i'm not right in front of him.

"Uh, im alright thanks" I said unsure of the stranger.

"Where was you headed? Maybe I can give you a ride?" he said, insisting on helping.

Now this man was fine, but that dont mean im just going to hop in his car.

"Evergreen High School." I said.

"That's where im headed, come on I dont bite." he said, smirking.

Look Nova, it's either walk or sit here in this heat. I sighed to myself before grabbing my stuff out my car and walking to his passenger door, him watching my every step.

"Ain never seen you here before, and in this town everybody knows everybody, you new?" he said, looking over at me.

"Yeah, just came from Chicago.", I responded, giving him a small smile.

"Happy to be your first friend, Im Ashton.", he said holding his hand out.

"Nova.", I responded shaking his hand.

He went on his phone before his music began to play. He then sped off.
