What Do You Want?

"Took you long enough." Ander said. He was leaning against the black Jeep parked a few spots from my car. I took a few seconds to take in his appearance.

'He's gotten so tall,' I noted 'and where did all the muscle come from?'

We used to be the same height. Both of us were just scrawny little kids trying to adjust to having abilities no other humans possessed. As the oldest two, Ander and I looked after the younger test subjects. We helped them cope with the experiments while simultaneously trying to get through them ourselves. We were best friends, two freak kids just trying to keep going.

"Are you done checking me out yet?" Ander smirked. I blushed but rolled my eyes at him.

"Oh please, I felt your eyes on me all class period." I snapped back. "So why are you here? You know it's dangerous."

"What? No pleasantries?" He joked. "Well since you asked so nicely, I have been great these past few years. Travelling here and there doing a bit of this and that. Spent the last couple of months tracking you down. Dominique made that pretty difficult but there's not much anyone can do to stop me." He shot me a cocky grin and I chuckled. Although Ander had definitely changed physically, mentally he was exactly the same.

"In that case, I've been good too. Dominique and I have been practically everywhere, moving after every semester or so. Not very fun but she has to move around for work a lot." I said, Ander's previously mischievous eyes narrowed.

"Yeah? Where is Dominique working now?" Something in his tone made me feel defensive so I answered quickly.

"At the hospital." I said. Dominique had been a renowned nurse during our Project S days so her finding work was always easy.

"Are you sure about that?" He shot back.

"Yes." I answered immediately. Why would I not be sure?

"But are you really sure?" Ander took a step toward me. "Have you ever actually seen her office? Met a coworker?"

I opened my mouth to confirm the yes, of course I had, but realized I hadn't, ever. We have lived in at least ten different towns and, in the time I have lived with her, Dominique has never allowed me to experience any part of her work life.

"That's what I thought." Ander said after a moment of silence. "Now answer this: How long have you been living here?"

"Almost a full school year." I mumbled, still confused. "What does any of this have to do with why you are here?" I said in an effort to make sense of the questions even though I had a feeling I already knew. Ander's answer both confirmed my feeling and made my heart stop.

"Project S is back."
