Equestrian terminology:
Green: Green is a very commonly used term to describe a horse with little to no formal training. While there is certainly still a range in just how green a horse is, this type of horse is not ideal for a beginner rider. A beginner rider can also be called a green rider.
Broke/broken: Broke, broken in, green broke and dead broke are all terms that simply mean the horse can be ridden. Unbroke means the horse is not yet ready to ride. All over the world, the term is the same. The connotation is to break the horse's spirit in order to dominate the horse and bend its will to the trainer's by a struggle.
Lame: When a horse is lame, they are compensating for musculoskeletal pain by altering their stance or gait. You might notice the horse trying to put less weight on a certain foot, but early signs of lameness are more subtle.Lameness is usually either in the front or hind feet, but in rare cases, it can be in both. We can distinguish two types of lameness in terms of severity: weight-bearing and non-weight bearing. Non-weight bearing lameness should be treated as an emergency as the horse cannot stand on all four feet.
Tack: Tack includes equipment like the saddle, saddle pad, stirrups, girth, bridle, reins, and more. The term is primarily used to refer to riding equipment (hence the phrase "tacking up," which means fitting a horse with all of the items necessary for riding them)
Hands/ hh: how we measure out horses so 16.2 hh would be 66-68 inches
Grooming: Basic grooming involves brushing the whole of the body in the direction of the hair growth to remove mud and dust, picking out the feet and tidying the mane and tail with a brush.
Eventing: Eventing is an equestrian sport that is made up of three stages: dressage, showjumping, and cross-country riding. Horses and riders must compete in each discipline, for which they are scored, with a combined score from all three areas used to determine the overall winner.Y/n
