"Huh. What now, smartass?" Madara mocks and Tobirama's brows furrow in thought.

"Well that's inconvenient"

The Uchiha stares at him, disbelief edged into his features, like he's not sure if he wants to laugh or cry. "You think so?"

They've circled the dome six times now and he's even talked the Uchiha into activating his Sharingan to search for possible weaknesses in the shield, but there's nothing.

Tobirama's senses are growing numb due to the constant assault of energy filling his mental radar—Madara has gotten even grumpier and his eye has started bleeding.

As if this is Tobirama's fault. (It isn't)

"I asked what it means for us," Madara snaps.

"It means the shield is held up from within. The source must be very powerful"

"Let's attack then"

Of course. After all that's the only Uchiha-reaction to expect. Powerful means challenge, challenge means attack. Right.

"You're a child, Madara"

That stings and Tobirama watches in satisfaction as the Uchiha's face deflates for a moment before he continues glaring.

"So? I can tear down that thing and you know it"

Tobirama knows. Even though Madara's voice is childishly defiant, he's right. Tobirama has watched the force that is Uchiha Madara on a battlefield countless times.

Child or not, Madara set loose promises collateral damage on all sides.

"I say we wait," Tobirama suggests, because he still needs Madara. Having him run into his death might be fun to watch but not beneficial for Tobirama. "Let's wait until someone comes out."

Madara doesn't look convinced. "Senju," he says "You're barely any more patient than I am"

"Try me," Tobirama scoffs. They share an icy glare and retreat into the woods to watch for a victim to abduct.

***

And now, they're waiting. They've positioned themselves in the treetops on the thickest branches, high above the ground. Madara's eyes are glued to the dome's east end, Tobirama is watching west.

A light breeze ruffles their hair, makes the leaves sway in the wind. When Tobirama announces he's going to leave the watching to Madara and start working on his seals again (whatever those are for), Madara barely reacts.

Tobirama also says something about not leaving any traces of their existence behind, but Madara sticks out his tongue at him and continues carving faces into the tree's bark.

He can burn the tree down later.

It's disgustingly boring, and while Madara should be used to it(after all patience is an important skill in battle because surprise is the best weapon)...he still hates it, okay?

And he knows for a fact that Tobirama—all lightning speed and steel cold intellect—does too.

They're waiting for someone to exit the shields and with nothing but the weirdly peaceful forest and no enemy-nin near to be wary of, the lurking is missing that specific edge of thrill.
