You were staring at your hands on your lap

You were staring at your hands on your lap. Completely zoned out of the world. The only thing you saw and heard was an explosion. The ringing in your ears hadn't stopped since that moment.

A little nudge from your right woke you up from your thoughts. Lifting up your head, you saw everyone looking at you. Tilting your head slightly, you looked at every one of them for a while.

"What?" You asked. When nobody answered, you arched your eyebrow, looking at Steve, who was in charge of the meeting.

He sighed, moving his hands to rest on his hips, and looked down, closing his eyes for a moment. "I know you are not happy right now with everything that happened, but it wasn't your fault. I don't want you blaming yourself." He looked up at you with soft eyes. "And, please, just pay a little bit of attention for now."

You smiled, even though it wasn't a sincere smile. "Roger that, Rogers." You saluted lazily and got comfortable in your chair.

As always, you zoned out again, not hearing a word at the meeting. After 40 long minutes, it finally came to an end. Everybody started getting up and leaving the room. You grabbed your phone from the table and looked at the hour. It was 7:30 PM. Getting up, you started heading to the destination you'd had in your mind for the last 40 minutes.

Getting in the elevator, you pressed the button for the first floor and leaned your body on the nearest wall. The doors almost closed, but then a hand came in between them. Looking up from the floor, you saw a red-head with a soft smile on her face.

"You wanted to get away without me?" She asked, smirking.

"I hoped, but I guess I can never get away from my little pain in my ass." You replied, smiling at her. She scoffed playfully and pressed the button for her floor.

She leaned her back on the opposite wall from you, putting her hands in her jacket pockets. "Are you going somewhere?"

"Maybe, why?" You asked, turning to face her with your body and looking at the spot on the floor between the two of you.

"And where are you going?" She asked, swinging her left leg lightly.

You looked at her with a small smirk. "Why would I tell you all of my secrets?"

She smiled, tilted her head, and shifted on her legs. "You know your secrets are safe with me." She replied. "And we both know you're so crazy about me that you just can't keep anything from me." she added in a slightly lower voice.

Your smirk grew a little bit. "Well, Romanoff, and I thought I was subtle." You pushed yourself off of the wall and stood straight. "But I have to break it up to you, you're not my lover number one."
