Outside, there was a real snowstorm so strong that it was able to throw smaller cars like some rag dolls, visibility was also practically none, everything was covered with a changing grayish white mass into which everything placed further than a meter disappeared in the storm. But inside the Commonwealth known as the Iron Gates, the only trace of that Armageddon was the faint wailing coming from the ventilation that had been broken for years. Two days have passed since the memorable fight with the mysterious program. Two days full of all-overwhelming depression, everyone was gloomy not only how were they supposed to feel when a tenth of everyone they knew was dead, and what's worse, they didn't even have a way to bury them, only the jumble of scrap that was left of them against the morality of Khan's order use to restore security. The work went extremely slowly, and the one night they had to spend with the thought that any Murder Drone could just walk in was dizzying. No wonder no one slept in that Uzi the second night either.
- Go to sleep, when was the last time you slept at all? - came a voice from the darkness.
Uzi instinctively snatched up what turned out to be a faulty weapon and aimed it into the darkness. But she didn't have to pull the trigger as her friend Thad stepped out of the darkness of the wide corridor. Apparently he couldn't sleep either and wandered around the community aimlessly.
- From what I can see, you're also awake," Uzi replied calmly.
- Well, yes, but I spend this night with the rest in the dining room and you stand at attention by the Door.
- I'm guarding the entrance.
- This entrance is safe. So either you go stand in the hangar this time, where it'll be much easier for any Hunter to get to you, or you'll come with me to the cafeteria.
- Do you think they'll want to talk to me?
- Uzi. What happened in the last few days is not your fault. Well, maybe a little, but believe me, everyone has already forgotten about it and you've got that unhealthy feeling of guilt in your head.
Uzi, after much thought, was persuaded to abandon her post at the Door. The best thing was that she knew from the beginning that no attack could come from this side, but in the event of an attack from the hangar, this corridor would be an ideal and at the same time the last defensive point where, in the event of an overwhelming enemy force, she could hide in the sides corridor ventilation shafts. The commune was dark, in order to reduce electricity consumption and the loss of the main electrician, it was decided that at night all lamps except those at the entrance and in the private rooms would be turned off, so Thad with a flashlight walked ahead illuminating the dead corridors, Uzi followed behind listening for any sign of a potential intruder which could literally be lurking from all side.
Rhhrraah
A sudden sound as if two rusty pieces of metal were rubbing against each other brutally cut through the air behind the backs of the two wanderers who shivered at the thought of what could have caused it. Uzi reacted instantly, dodging to the side and aiming at a point only known to her in the blackness of the corridor. Thad was slower and that was a mistake. The flashlight with a quiet clank fell on the steel floor and after rolling about a meter it began to illuminate and blind alredy only Uzi.- Thad?! - She screamed loudly into the darkness, but no one answered.
Without much thought, she caught a flashlight on the run and she ran towards the canteen. Since the sounds heralding the attack came from her back, the Hunter must have just headed towards the canteen full of other drones. Uzi didn't want to think about it and just sped up even more, unfortunately it was a mistake. She didn't even see what she tripped on and then fell over. The rifle flew out of her hand as soon as she fell, but the flashlight held firmly in her left hand stayed in place, unfortunately the light flickered and went out - when it hit the floor.
- Come on, don't let me down now - Uzi said to herself rhythmically tapping the flashlight as if it would help. This senseless action gave only that the flashlight turned on again for a moment to completely blind her - Cheap garbage - she screamed in a fit of anger and threw it into the darkness of the corridor. Moments later, I heard the sound of her hitting the wall and then falling to the floor.
But in the darkness before her, she finally saw something. Unfortunately, it wasn't Thad or any other Worker Drone. In the ubiquitous blackness, she saw a clearly visible yellow X. As if to spite her, so that at least she could see the Hunter tearing her guts, the flashlight finally worked, illuminating her as well as the murderer.
