My heart pounding, I ran through the forest, stumbling over roots and fallen branches. Night was falling and a chill was settling over the woods. Soon, my breathe was coming out in clouds of silver that evaporated as I fled. If he caught me here, alone and defenseless, I knew that I would not be able to stop him from taking me. I just had to keep running. I needed to get as far away from him as possible. If I didn't, then everyone and everything I'd ever loved would pay the price. I couldn't let that happen. I wouldn't.
As I leapt across a small, bubbling stream, I slipped, getting a mouthful of mud and grazing my knee. Cursing, I wiped the sticky goop from my mouth and pushed onwards, slower this time. As I marched on, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being watched by something... or someone. Swallowing, I turned around slowly and sucked in a breath. He was there, watching me. As I watched, his mouth tugged up in a sinister smile, and I readied myself to run, but a stinging pain on my hip made me look down. A dart stuck out of my side. I made to pull it out and make a dash for it, but before I could order my hand to move, the ground came rushing up to meet me.
