Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.

Normani POV

I was getting ready for my first day of junior year of high school in a new state. I was super apprehensive but excited to start a new chapter in life.

I put on my favorite pair of ripped jeans, a half white shirt with see through long sleeves, and my new black and white adidas. I gave myself one last check in the mirror and headed downstairs for breakfast.

When I got downstairs, my grandma was already in the kitchen, busy making my favorite breakfast of grits, eggs, and bacon.

This was the same breakfast she would make for me since I was a kid, and it never failed to make the day feel much brighter. my grandma smiled at me and said, "Good morning, sweetheart.

Let's get you ready for your first day of school." I smiled back and hugged her before sitting down to enjoy the delicious breakfast.

After we ate, my grandma helped me by putting mousse in my hair so my braids still looked fresh, put on my locket, and applied a light layer of makeup so I would look my best.

After a few minutes of doing that, my grandma and I went outside and she walked me to the car.

My grandma smiled at me and said, "You've got this. Have a great day at school." I smiled back at her. "Thanks, Grandma. I appreciate it. I'll drive safe, I promise." I said and gave my grandma a hug and then got in the car and started the engine.

I could feel my heart pounding with excitement as I pulled out of the driveway and began the drive to school. "You've got this, Normani. You'll do great." I said to myself as I drove. After I arrived at school and parked my car, I got out of the car.

I took a deep breath and released it. "You've got this, Normani. You've got this." I said as I began walking to my locker. Once I arrived at my locker, I put in the combination and opened it. I took out all of my textbooks and put them in my backpack and closed my locker.

I started to walk towards my English class looking at each of the room numbers to make sure I went into the right class, with my footsteps echoing in the empty hallway.

I took out my notebook and pen as I went, thinking about the day's lesson plan because I am the biggest nerd if we are being honest. As I round the corner, I see my English teacher, Mrs. Brown, standing in the doorway, smiling at me.

I return the smile and gestures as I walk into the classroom. I take a seat in the back of the room and set my notebook on the desk. Mrs. Brown began the lesson, and I was soon immersed in the world of literature.

I felt a bit of surprise when I looked up and saw a random raven-haired, green-eyed, pale girl sitting next to me in class, even though there were other empty seats still available.

I couldn't help but wonder who she was and why she had chosen to sit next to me. I eyed the girl curiously as the professor began to lecture on the works of Shakespeare. Since I was new I figured that I was the outcast and nobody at all wanted to sit next me.

I looked away from her and focused on the teacher until I felt a tap on my shoulder.

I turned to see the girl staring at me with a friendly smile on her face. "Hi," she said in a soft voice. I blinked in surprise, "Hi." I answered back with a small smile of my own.
