Nova gazed through her bedroom window. It's a full moon out tonight. Even without looking she'd know. There's a pull under her skin that she feels only during the end of the month. Her knuckles itch. She scratches them.

She pulls herself up from the windowsill, walking down the stairs to the kitchen, where she sees her mother.

"Nova! Will you grab me a fork from the drawer, please," she says, smiling at her from her place at the table. Nova nods. "Thank you!"

As she approaches the drawer, the itch grows stronger and stronger, feeling like a burn. Opening the drawer is like fire on her skin. She grabs a fork as fast as she can and runs to give it to her mother.

"What's got you in such a hurry? Are you alright?" Her mother looks concerned, but Nova ignores her in favor of running out the back door, towards the woods.

The fire on her skin is doused with moonlight. She falls to her knees in relief, crunching leaves under her knees.

The light floods her, fills her with something not unlike relaxation. As she starts to fall asleep, she feels it.

Cracking, snapping, crunching.

It's her. Her bones, her joints.

She looks up. Stares at the moon. The moon stares back.

"Nova?! Are you okay? What's going on??" Her mother shouts, breaking Nova out of her trance.

They meet eyes. Nova recognises her, but all her mother sees is a beast.

She takes a breath. Runs.
