I wake up from my slumber to be acquainted with my father knocking on my door doing our secret knock. "Sweetie are you up? It's a very special day!" he says. "Yes, dad I know you can come in." he always is excited whenever it's my birthday. I'm sure it's because mother was taken from us and never got to celebrate. "Sweetheart I don't think you know what today is, you seem so gloomy.". "Father, I know. It's my birthday and I'm 16 now.". "I know but you're still my little girl.". "Yes, daddy and I always will be."
7:35am
I start getting ready for the school day wearing an amazing matching black set consisting of a crop top tied in the front with pants. Also paired with white shoes. When I'm finished changing, I hear my father call out to me from the first floor. I run down the two flights of stairs to meet my father in his silly apron saying "kiss the chef" holding two plates of breakfast. He gets defensive when I laugh at him. "Hey why are you laughing at me!". I laugh even harder this time knowing he doesn't like it when I laugh at him.
ring, ring, ring...
"Oh, I'm sorry sweetheart let me take this call really quick". My father has a really serious job. He never told me what it was, but I know it provided him enough money to spoil me every year of my life and counting. He leaves the room and takes the call unaware that I could still hear bits and pieces of the phone call. "No! She's 16 I thought we agreed on 20!" he says with a hint of anger. "It's either 20 or 18! She's just a little girl!". "No!". I flinch and shake. I've never heard him yell before. I hear him hang up the phone and I return to my previous position to pretend as if I didn't hear anything. But I wonder, were they talking about me? "Well, Father, thank you for breakfast. I'm going to head upstairs and finish getting ready.". "But darling what about your presents?". Oh, I forgot about opening the presents. "We can open them when I get back from school dad." I go back up to the third floor and finish getting ready.
8:30am
I arrive at school and wave my father goodbye. When he leaves, I hear my friend Eliza start singing. "Happy birthday to you~". She than reaches behind her and pulls out one of my favorite cakes. "Thank you, Liz, I love it!". "Anything for you Flaco!"
