Alyara remembers the first vision Eywa blessed her with.
She was a mere ten years old, grasping her twin's hand tightly in her own as she maneuvered her tswin into connecting with a bundle of vines from the Tree of Voices, closing her eyes as her vision went white.
When she opened them, she was in the ocean. A much older Neteyam was in her grasp, trying to speak to her but not being able to get the words out. Her hands were pressed against a bullet wound in his chest, and she faintly realized that she was whispering prayers.
Alyara watched her brother die in front of her.
The same boy that cradled her to him when she slept, who brushed her hair and kissed her wounds and was everything she only ever imagined of being.
'This could be changed,' A soft voice rang out, sounding like wind against the harsh ocean waves. Alyara whipped around frantically, looking for the person who had spoken.
'The sea takes, and the sea gives.' It whispered again, this time closer. Alyara felt her head begin to hurt, eyes closing against her will as she was broken out of her trance, gasping for breaths of air as Kiri held her.
She remembers crying that day. She remembers not being able to tell anyone about it either, knowing that the knowledge would destroy her parents the way it was destroying her.
She never stopped having visions. Eywa's voice whispered to her and her hands opened Alyara's eyes to what she hadn't seen before, but the outcome of each one was always the same. No matter what she tried to do, Neteyam died.
Until one day she fell asleep and was thrown into another one. The scenery was different- she was in a ship. It was sinking, and she was watching Neteyam fight. She turned and made eye contact with a sky person.
'The sea gives, and the sea takes.' The voice rang out again, and it was then that Alyara realized what she had to do.
A life for a life. Eywa would take her, and save Neteyam. It was a tale as old as the First Songs, and Alyara accepted her fate with open arms.
She jumps in front of the bullet, feels it hit her skin, and wakes up the happiest she's felt from a vision in a very long time.
OR Alyana Sully is perfectly fine knowing that she is going to die young, but love and Eywa get in the way of her plans.
