 EXT. NIGHT. 

A YOUNG WOMAN, MABEL, 33, IS DRIVNG A CAR HOME. UP AHEAD SHE SEES NO ONE ON THE ROAD; MCU OF HER FACE, AS SHE SEES A GAS STATION. CLOSE-UP OF THE MIDDLE-AGED GAS ATTENTANT'S FACE. 

GAS ATTENTANT: 'DO YOU NEED SOME GAS, MISS?'.

MAVIS: 'YES, PLEASE. I'M GOING HOME SOON'. 

GAS ATTENTANT: 'BAD NIGHT TO GO OUT YOU KNOW. $2.66 FOR THE GAS'.

CLOSE-UP OF MAVIS'S RIGHT AND AS GIVES HIM A $10 NOTE.

GAS ATTENTANT: 'THANK YOU FOR THE TIP, MISS'.

AND HE WALKS AWAY.

INT. CAR. NIGHT.

MAVIS SEES A HITCHHIKER. 

HE WEARS A FELT HAT, A RED SHIRT, BROWN TROUSERS, A GREY BELT, BLACK SOCKS, A WEDDING RING ON HIS RIGHT, MIDDLE FINGER...AND HE IS SMILING. 

HITCHHIKER: 'LATE NIGHT TONIGHT TO BE DRIVING, MISS, ON THE HIGHWAY'.

MAVIS: 'I AM GONG HOME'.

HITCHHIKER: 'A LOT OF WOMEN ARE OUT AT NIGHT'.

MAVIS: 'ARE YOU GOING HOME?'.

HITCHHIKER, (leaning forward into the driver's-side window): 'I ROAM THE HIGHWAYS...NEITHER HERE OR THERE...OR ANYWHERE'.

MAVIS: 'THAT'S A BIT QUEER, ISN'T IT'.

HITCHHIKER: 'DEPENDS ON WHO YOU ASK, MISS'. 

AND HE SMIRKS AT THE WOMAN...AND VANISHES LIKE A GHOST.
