Looking down at your feet, you slowly shuffle your way to your patients room. As you look up, you lock eyes with a young child no older than 12.
As you're about to talk, the child's mother speaks up. "Please, please tell me he's getting better! I beg of you!" It breaks your heart seeing her with dark eye bags and messed up hair. She hadn't left her child's side since he was admitted to the hospital.
As you lower your head to bow to her, you tell her what you had been planning to say. "Im very sorry but his condition has decreased significantly in the past few days. Im afraid we can no longer postpone his surgery."
After saying the painful news to the patients mother and watching her sob into her handkerchief, you keep you head down and slowly walk out. It hurt to know that her child was in pain and you couldn't do much about it. That child had heart cancer and the surgery he needed didn't have a high success rate.
On your way to check on your other patient, you bump into Chishiya, your colleague. One of the few people you talked to other than your patients. Although you weren't really friends and would only greet each other on the rare occasion.
As you walked away from Chishiya since it didn't seem like he even noticed you, you rub your hand over the sore part of your upper arm. Damn him for having such beautiful, strong arms.
You're shift was about to end so you didn't think it would matter if you told him he hurt you or not. It would've been a waste of time and energy anyway, you'd rather be at home laying in bed sleeping peacefully.
Making your way back to your locker, you look into other patients rooms. It saddens you that illnesses exist in this world. The families that have to deal with it and the pain and suffering is unimaginable. You're just grateful your family doesn't have any serious medical history.
Turning into the locker room, you open your locker and take out your stuff to bring home. As you begin to daydream, your phone slips out of your hands and you begin to fumble around while trying to catch it.
It felt as if everything was in slow motion, having to watch with wide eyes while your phone slowly fell closer to the ground and as it hits the floor with what sounded and felt like a loud 'bang' the forbidden cracks appear all over the front and back. Oh how your day couldn't get any worse!
As if it couldn't get any worse.
You lifted your head up, and everyone was gone. There wasn't any sight of the nurses at their desks nor any sound of patients coughing or yelling at the doctors. In a panic, you quickly walk out of the locker room and turn you head side to side.
'Maybe i'm just going crazy' you thought. But the more you walked around the hospital the more you panicked. You had thousands of questions circling in your head right now.
Questions like:
Where was everyone?
Why was there no electricity?
Why were you the only one there?
Was there anyone else?
Was someone trying to prank you? This was making your mind go crazy. Just as you were about to give up on looking, you noticed a bright sign outside displaying the word "[GAME]" on it. This added one or two more questions to your head.
When did it get so dark?
Did this mean there were other people here as well? You didn't know, but still wanted to find out. Making your way to where the brightly lit boards led you, you ended up in a scummy looking building. After taking your last turn and walking forward, a short tune played out loud. There was a sign saying "1 per person" and multiple phones on a table.
After taking a random phone, it turns on and it performs face id. Before your ears perked up at the sound of footsteps. Looking up from the phone you see three men. One with bleached yellow hair, one dressed in a suit, and another who looks homeless.
You clear your throat to get their attention. They scan you and after they look at you with relieved expressions displayed on their faces as they walk closer, resulting in the tune to play three more times. They pick up their own phones just as two other females walk in, one dressed in a school uniform and the other in business attire.
"Registration is now closed." a speaker announced. Just then the elevator doors opened up and everyone got in. All your phones then lit up to a white screen and started explaining the rules of the game known as 'Dead or Alive'.
As the elevator doors open, everyone walks out and all the phones stated the time limit. In a panic, the young school girl ran through the alive door but got shot by a laser. Going into a panic, the homeless looking man tries his best to come up with a plan. As he was coming up with one, he asked for a pen.
Since you were still wearing your lab coat you had tons of pens in the pocket so you offered him one. "I have one, here." You said as you handed him the first one you could find. "Thank you!!" He gratefully responds. During that time the other lady handed him a small piece of paper and he began to draw something.
It was a map, of course! You recalled seeing the map when entering the elevator earlier. You just didn't expect someone who looks like that would pay attention to little things like that.
Door after door, the time frame you were given shortened every time. You were totally freaked out! I mean, who wouldn't be? After witnessing a school girl die right in front of you with your own eyes, it made you second guess ever coming to this scummy building.
After the homeless looking guy chose which door to pick, he opened it with only 5 seconds remaining. Everyone got out fine except for the male wearing a suit. He made it out alive, but with a serious burn. Without thinking, you grab him and ignore his pained screams. Yelling at the homeless male to pick a door fast.
Luckily, everyone except for the one school girl made it out alive in one peace. After all the running down the stairs you were all faced with a roughed up male. He was spitting out random things you've never heard of. Saying his 'visa had run out' and 'he doesn't want to play anymore.' Just then, a laser shot through his head and his body fell to the cement ground.
Freaked out, your grip loosens on the male you forgot you were supporting. Your face scrunches up as you murmur a few words. "that poor man, I pity him."
Although that didn't last long when you noticed a round white table with a card in the centre of it with the three of clubs on it. Quickly grabbing it you shove it in your lap coat pocket. "C'mon guys, we need to find a place that had medical supplies." you state.
"Wait!" The male with bleached hair calls out. Looking back, you finally get to have a good look at everyone's faces. "Since you're helping us, can you tell us your name? I'm Karube."
Before you had a chance to talk, the homeless male opens his mouth. "I'm Arisu and the guy you're holding is Chota." Nodding your head, you're about to open your mouth again until the other woman does it before you. "I'm Shibuki." She states.
Nodding your head once again, you finally have the chance to speak. "I'm Y/N. Now that we're done with introductions, let's get a move on before the pain gets worse and his wound gets infected."
