I hear the door open and I finish laying down newspapers. "I got a few different colours here" Dan says as he drops about a dozen buckets of paint and five paintbrushes onto the floor.I thank him and show him the plan I made on my laptop while he was at the store. "I didn't think we'de have enough of each colour to cover the entire ceiling with two coats so I was going to do something like this. "Should we look at a tutorial, I heard something once on an interior design show about plaster before paint." Dan suggests. "Nah, we'll be fine" I respond.
"If it's okay with you then maybe you could start that section with the deep purple paint as a base coat" I mention to Dan. I've no idea how to paint a ceiling so I'm just guessing that it's similar to painting your nails. "We should probably scrape off the old paint first" Dan laughs. "oh yeah, I'm so rubbish at this" I giggle.
After about an hour we've scraped off all the old paint and we are waiting for the multi coloured base coat to dry. "I'll have to take a photo of this for Phil when it's done. He has an obsession with galaxy space stuff" Dan jokes.
I get a spray of white paint across my face. "What was that for? That's the second time you've done it" I complain. "I'm sorry, I was just trying to do the tiny stars. I'll fix it for you" he apologises.
He tries to rub the paint off my face with his thumb "that's not going to work" I mumble. Dan runs into the bathroom and comes back out with a face cloth. "this might help" he laughs, holding my chin up with one hand and rubbing off the paint with the other. "It doesn't matter, I'll probably get more paint on me anyway while painting." I laugh, dodging the face cloth. "meanwhile though, you are completely paint-free" I joke, flicking my paint covered brush at his face. He shrieks and begins to laugh.
I lie on the newspaper covered bed and gaze at the finished ceiling. "That's amazing" Dan exclaims. "lie down, you can see it better from here" I offer. Dan lies down next to me and we stare at the ceiling. "Oh remember to take a photo for Phil" I remind him.
"What!?" Dan laughs after checking his phone. "What happened?" I ask.
"It's literally 11pm, we've been painting for like ten hours" he chuckles. "oh my god, no wonder I'm hungry" I giggle.
I wave goodbye to Dan and turn back around into my galaxy ceiling-ed dorm. I take out my camera and lie on the floor to get a good photo. After I've taken about ten I order pizza and start editing them on my laptop. I should really be studying but I'm too tired now. The newspapers start to annoy me after a while so I throw them out and hope that no paint drips from the ceiling onto the floor.
The doorbell rings and I rush to the door, it must be the pizza guy. Instead, I see a curly haired Dan. "I'm sorry, I forgot my phone and I only realised on the bus so...yeah" he apologises. I assure him that it's no problem and give him back his phone.
I'm still chatting to Dan when the doorbell rings again. "That must be pizza, are you sure you don't want to take some home? I wouldn't eat a whole pizza to myself at 11pm" I say to Dan. The pizza guy hands me the pizza box and I pay him. "I'm fine honestly" Dan laughs. "At least take some for Phil. Otherwise you'd be a bad friend." I convince him.
I wave goodbye to Dan, who I only just managed to convince to take some pizza home and sit at my desk to check tumblr while eating the rest of the pizza.
Why couldn't my boyfriend have been like them? Why do I always make stupid mistakes with people? Or rather I can't choose the right people. I stare at the ceiling, it's comforting because the galaxy doesn't mind that I make mistakes.
It won't judge me.
