Chapter Four
We carried the beds piece by piece into the house and up the stairs to our perspective rooms, Stephanie's bed first as it was smaller and lighter, we drug it down the hall to her room and laid it out where she wanted it; her eyes appeared uneasy still from the events earlier today. Hopefully it would soon pass, I left her to unpack the few boxes that the moving crew had brought to her room before they skipped out on the job and went back down stairs to get Lisa and mine’s bed.
I walked into the pod trailer and started to drag it out when I heard a rustling behind me, I turned around to ask Lisa to give me a hand but she was not there; no one was. I reached down beside some boxes and picked up Steph’s old softball bat and slowly moved towards the exit of the door, peering out around the dark yard filled with trees but saw nothing; I shined a flashlight around the yard but still nothing.
I chalked it up to the wind blowing leaves around and went back to the trailer and continued dragging the mattress out, it was being stubborn not wanting to slide as if it were wedged but when I looked on both sides of it there was nothing catching it anywhere; it didn’t make sense. I am no body builder but I am certainly not weak by any means, I gave it a sharp pull and still wasn’t budging.
I tilted the mattress to the right and there stood a man, dark in complexion, I couldn’t make out his facial features except for his dark frightening eyes, they were sunken in and appeared to almost glow black as he growled at me. My body tensed up and felt as if all the warmth left my body, the man glared into my eyes and continued growling, then with one stern shove the mattress flew forward striking me with great force knocking me backwards out of the trailer; onto my back cracking my head on a rock knocking me out cold.
When I awoke Lisa was at my side crying, shaking me trying to wake me up. I sprung to my feet and glanced around the yard quickly, seeing nothing, I picked up the bat and rushed into the trailer looking around but again found nothing.
"Lisa how long have I been out, when you came out here did you see him?"
I stopped myself there, I didn’t want to freak her or Stephanie out anymore then the moving men did. I rationalized the situation thinking back to what happened, could I have dreamed it? I was pulling on that mattress pretty hard, did it break free and I fall backwards knocking myself out? It’s a good possibility, the human mind works in a funny way. I am sure the things that moving man said earlier was the power of suggestion when I hit my head and was knocked out my brain, created a scenario with a nonexistent man as a result of the suggestion of earlier; that’s got to be it.
"I don’t know how long you were out John, you were on the ground when I came out to find you and did I see what exactly? Why are you running around with that bat John?"
"I guess that blow to the head when I hit the ground just really messed me up for a minute, it’s noting. I am just a little confused; probably have a slight concussion, nothing to be alarmed about."
I picked up the mattress now laying on its side and got Lisa to help me carry it into the house and up the stairs to our bedroom on the right side of the stairs, then went back down and locked up the trailer for the night, my head was throbbing and I didn’t want to mess with the box springs tonight. Glancing around the yard one more time then returning to the house, one thing is for sure I am not going to get any sleep tonight if I have a concussion, I thought to myself as I locked the front doors.
