Jazmine's POV

I was sitting in my 8th grade history class next to my bestfriend in the entire universe, Huey Freeman. My hair was twisted and put up in a ponytail with two loose ones in the front and I was wearing overall shorts and the 'black excellence' t-shirt Huey gifted me for my birthday, along with rainbow checkered vans.

We were talking about the next presidential election in class and I sighed as the most ignorant person in the universe defended his opinion on why Trump should be the President again. He got impeached twice already, I don't think he'll make it to round two... (This aged bad)

I just ignored him and started drawing on my paper. The door opened and the teacher called my name "Jazmine! Could you show our new student around the school?" I looked up and nodded "Yes ma'am." I looked over to the girl. She was so gorgeous... I mean, she had pretty brown skin, pretty braids that went down her back, and she was wearing cargo shorts and a white shirt along with black crocs she had on. She should really put those in sports mode.

I went over to her and stuck my hand out for a handshake. "I'm Jazmine DuBois! What's your name?" She smiled and shook my hand. "Nefertari Hamidi!" She replied with the same enthusiasm. "All my friends call me Niffy though. Or Tari. Whatever you prefer.. pleasure to meet you." We walked out the classroom and I showed her around the building.

As we were walking back, I noticed some wristbands on her arm and pointed them out. "What're all those for?- I mean- they look nice.." She looked and we stopped walking. "Oh what, my wristbands?" I nodded and she started to explain.

"Well, this is my Love is Love pride bracelet, lesbian pride, black lives matter, support black businesses, trans lives matter, this one is for my brother who died as a baby, this is suicide awareness andddd, the rest are kinda generic, from sky zone, roller rinks, school events, whatever really..."

I nodded and looked at her "so you're... Y'know, gay?" I asked genuinely and she nodded, a flirty smirk forming on her lips..

I couldn't help but to stare I mean--

Those lips, I could just kiss them..

What?!  WHAT??...

WHAT????

"Why, do you wanna kiss me?" She teased as though she read my mind- I mean, I don't want to kiss her but- ugh. I blushed and shook my head "No no, I'm not- I don't swing that way! I like boys.." she giggled playfully, pushing my shoulder.

"I'm kidding with you.." we kept walking the hallway and Nefertari looked at me. "Tell me about yourself, Jazzy... Can I call you Jazzy?"

I agreed and looked down as I spoke. "Um Jazzy is fine, it's the first nickname I've had derived from my name... Most of my other friends call me Mariah.. lets see what I can say. Well, I'm from Prince George's county, Maryland. I moved to Woodcrest when I was ten where I met my best friends Cindy and Huey.. uh, I like Steven Universe I lovee Steven Universe! I like Hamilton, I like reading Nancy Drew and Dork Diaries, I like Prince but my dad doesn't let me listen to his music. But I do love that genre and style, it's so unique... I digress, what about you?"

She shrugged "I'm from Pennsylvania. Not Philly tho, I lived out where nothing interesting happens. I just moved to Woodcrest but, I've been in Maryland for 3 years now. I was living in Bel-air before.. I love musical theatre! I looove Michael Jackson, Prince, Whitney, all 80's music, same as you. And I love cartoons! Steven Universe, Craig of the Creek, Owl House, Amphibia, and a lot- LOT more.. I always spend my weekends watching Cartoon Network." She bragged casually, "I do like reading Dork Diaries though. Y'know you've got good taste, DuBois!"

We kinda just walked in silence for a little bit, me occasionally naming the hall or the office we walked by.

She made me so nervous and I didn't know why. Like good nervousness. I just want to be her best-est friend in the whole universe! She seemed so cool and fun, she was like everything you would want to be! It's astonishing, honestly...

Plus she's so confident. You can just tell by the way she carries herself. Her walk, her smile, her voice.... ugh, her voice.

She is just the type of person you just want to be like in life. I admire it! I adore it..

We made it back to class and she sat at my table with me. Huey looked up at us and turned his attention to Niffy. "Huey Freeman, nice to meet you." He spoke calmly and very concisely. She nodded, smiling. "Nefertari Hamidi. The pleasure is mine, Mr. Freeman."

We all sat in silence, doing schoolwork. Then Tari asked us "Do you got Houseparty or Snapchat? To talk outside of school?" I looked up and nodded quickly. "yeah, I do!" I smiled pulling my phone out.

Huey nodded slightly, looking up from his computer. "I have a snapchat." He said quietly, looking back down at his computer.

She smiled at us excitedly. "Great! Add me on there. My username is n-i-ff-y underscore the beast but, with a three instead of the e then it's dot zero-seven." I nodded and sent my friend request on Houseparty and Snapchat, watched her accept it. It just made my heart warm for some reason.

Soon enough the class ended and I went to gym, ready to rant to Cindy about what's going on. I sped walked to the gym and went into the locker room. I always hated the locker room, it made me nervous. I saw Cindy and smiled, excited to see my bestie! "Hey Cindy!" I waved, smiling.

She looked over and hugged me "Hey Jazzy, girl!"

We started getting dressed and I looked at her "Have you ever met someone and you're so envious of them but also they make you super nervous and whenever you think about them, you start questioning... certain things. All in very good and positive ways!"

Nefertari was that girl for me. She makes me feel how Huey made me feel when I first met him. But that was a crush and I don't like girls. Right? Yeah, I don't have a crush on her. That's silly. It's just a friend crush..

Cindy looked at me "What're you questioning yourself about?" I looked down and mumbled "I think I might like the new girl.. well, no, probably not. Nevermind, I don't think so, I mean, I can't." Cindy nodded and then stopped.

"There's a new girl?"

I nodded and put my sneakers on. "mmhm. I just met her last class."

She nodded again, rubbing her chin and thinking. "You... like girls? Little miss Jazmine?"

I shrugged "No! It's just- it was stupid. She just made me feel different! She made me feel.. ugh I don't know how to describe it. I just- I dunno. I've never liked girls, I don't know why she's different.. No girl has ever made me feel like that before. I'm sure it'll pass." We walked out the locker room and started walking around the gym.

Cindy and I mostly just talked and joked for the rest of the class and the next thing I know, I'm in chorus and do you wanna guess who's in that class?

Guess guess guess!

Nefertari Hamidi.

She looked at me and her eyes lit up as she sat next to me quickly. "I didn't know you sing.." I chuckled nervously. "Yeah.." I mumbled and she hugged me.

"What class did you have?" She looked at me and I took out my music sheets "Gym... Unfortunately." I rolled my eyes playfully as I placed my music on my music stand and she hummed in acknowledgement .

"I had science which was pretty cool! Oh- and this dude was trying to hit on me in the hallway..." She spoke casually and I just sighed.

I mean, I could see why.

"Oh really?" I asked, feigning shock. She nodded and leaned on my shoulder, looking at my music as class started.

I went about the rest of my day, confused on how I'm feeling. By the end of the night, I wrote it off as strong feelings of envy or admiration. I couldn't think of any other logical explanation other than just straight up having a crush. And you know, I don't swing that way.
