The Ceremony

I hated that orphanage, so leaving was always a safety net I had in the back of my head if things ever got too bad, and they did. After being around Shai directly after my 13th birthday, (the age of maturity when most people should be getting their powers) that week things got weird. I was use to seeing the older kids in the cafeteria messing around with their powers, but I didn't know it was something you had to learn to control. My first week I was accidentally blasting holes through doors, furniture, and walls, constantly.
I can feel when those powers are about to happen because my hands go completely numb and then sting and burn really bad right before the blast comes. Unfortunately I am quick to irritate and couldn't hide my feelings without making a hole in something. The day before the ceremony in the cafeteria on older kid that was about to age out of the orphanage tried to pull a feather off of Shai's tail. She was on my shoulder and when he did that she turned around to face him, and I felt the stinging in my hands and pointed it above his head just enough to scare him, But that landed me in head mistress's office.

"Why must you always be a problem-child? You have to control your powers Sunny. Even though you may have light magic, it can still hurt others."
"I wasn't going to hurt the idiot, he pulled one of Shai's feathers and and I felt her emotions, she was scared when he did it, and my hands flared up. I just wanted him to leave us alone." She looked at my with a more tightly pinched face than she usually wears, and walked over to shut the door. "Sunny, this boy told me that your crow's eyes lit up purple." "Purple? How is that even possible crow's don't have magic of their own, they only use their person's magic right?!" Shai cawed. I can't directly communicate with her, but I could swear it felt like she knew something I didn't. "That's correct. You may have someone else's crow there. Be careful with that, remember it sent me to the hospital." "This is my crow we're connected and as far as I know, birds can only connect with one person magically." I hissed back at her. "That's right but how do you know you and this crow are connected? I've seen your proof of light powers so I know that it cannot be you coming through that crow. Your hands don't light up purple, they light up white when they go off and they don't have a lingering black fog behind the affects." "Well I knew she was a she before me and Rainy looked up how to tell, Im telling you me and this bird have a connection, he was probably just trying to get me in trouble, it's no secret no one likes me.". Shai turned to look at me and barely booped me on the cheek with her beak. "Well this bird definitely doesn't want to leave your side, but no more shooting at or around kids, Mr.Farroway will not be receiving any more calls or paperwork from the hospital. Got it?" "Got it, your majesty."
Later that night I was walking back into my room with Shai when the older boy from the cafeteria was standing there, in my room. "What are you doing here? Where's Katie?" She usually always beat me back to the room. "I'll be the one asking questions, but if you're so concerned about your dear friend Katie, she is the one who let me in here." Figures, I'd do the same to her. "Okay... do we have a problem, you're the one that pulled her feather." "Yeah we do have a problem, my whole family is in The Wings and uhhh I saw purple coming out of your crow's eyes." This idiot really thinks I have dark magic? "Look dude", I blasted out the window, "no purple, no black fog. So can you get the hell out of my room now?" He pushed me up onto the windowsill and held my back keeping me from falling. "My grandpa told me a story when he first joined the wings, about a man who had both light and dark powers, I know it's possible and I'm watching you Cloudy." Right as he finished that sentence black fog came from Shai's eyes, and before he could see the fog, he passed out. I hopped off of the windowsill and looked over at my mirror, Mine and Shai's eyes were both glowing purple. It's the night before the ceremony, I have some idiot Jock passed out in my room, and I all of sudden have black magic, the night before the ceremony. This should be fun.
Me and Shai practiced using the fog to pick him up and carry him into the hallway, key word practiced, because that resulted in some bruising and a black eye for meat-head here. I practiced all night before the ceremony trying to control my emotions to make the light in my hands appear white instead of purple. I knew I wouldn't sleep unless I got the hang of it. The next day we all heard the bell calling everyone to the cafeteria, where the ceremony was being held.
"Welcome everyone to the celebration of another generation of magicians for Oroville Orphanage! We are so proud of all of you and can't wait to see what light you spread into the world!" Everyone began getting called up onto the stage one by one in my age group, and as always i was at the beginning of it because my last name is Campbell. During the ceremony everyone must walk up to the five different tables and wave their hand over them while using a little bit of magic to see which table lights up. When one does, that's your tool that will best help assist your magic. Once everyone knows their category we can all start learning in detail about our powers.
Jock boy was sitting up close to the stage staring me down, he looked like a hungry lion watching it's dinner. I stared back when I noticed him, but it wasn't long enough before my name got called. "Sunny Campbell, it is time for your magical abilities to shine!" Shai was sitting on Rainy's shoulder while I went up to the stage. I hate going Infront of people, I could feel everyone's eyes on me with every step I took towards the stage. I began to get light headed when Jock boy stuck his foot out and tripped me, this idiot whose name i don't even care to find out had just redirected the entire course of my future. As I was falling down purple lights came from my hands and I used the fog to cushion my fall. There was a single gasp across the whole cafeteria and Shai and me put our fog together to make the entire room pass out. I ran upstairs dizzy from the anxiety and pounding in my chest, grabbed my small bag of clothes, Shai's food, and a few snacks Katie had left by the door. Honestly there was a part of me smiling on the inside to run from that hell hole, And I never did look back.
