The Friendship Begins

The next day, Hailee is outside flying her kite while her mother makes lunch and her dad is bringing Griffin to his friends house. Her kite gets stuck in a tree, she tugs at the string but she can't get it out.

"My kite," She cries. Hailee runs inside to her mom who comforts her. Cheri heads outside and tries to get it but she can't either.

"We'll have to wait till your dad comes home."

"But I want my kite." Hailee points at her kite as she cries.

"I'm sorry sweety but there's nothing I can do." Cheri kisses Hailee on the head and they head inside. 

"I'll get your kite Hailee," Y/N says to himself. 

Y/N sneaks away from his garden and into the Steinfeld's garden. He looks up at the tree and jumps up catching a branch. He struggles to pull himself along but he does. He swings himself into the tree and begins climbing towards the kite. 

He begins untangling the kite from the tree wrapping up the string and holding the kite in his mouth as he starts climbing back down. He lowers himself from the tree and takes the kite from his mouth. He runs to the back door of the Steinfeld house and waits for someone to answer. Cheri opens the door and Y/N shows the kite. 

"She's upstairs why don't you give it to her?"

"Okay." Y/N runs inside and heads up the stairs. 

"Hailee?" 

"Who's there?" She walks out of her bedroom to see Y/N. 

"Y/N?"

"Hi. I got your kite." He shows her the kite.

She runs to him and hugs him tightly which he returns. 

"Thank you so much Y/N."

"It's okay. I didn't like seeing you sad."

"My hero." She chuckles and looks at him as he smiles back.

"I'll always be your hero." They both laugh before she grabs his hand and drags him back outside where they take turns flying the kite. 

A few days later Hailee is roller-skating with Griffin when she trips over a rock and hurts her knee. She cries and Griffin skates inside getting their parents at the same time the Baxter's arrive home from their day out. Y/N rushes out of the car and runs over to Hailee ignoring the calls his parents. 

"Hailee." Y/N screams as he skids onto his knees beside her.

"What happened?" 

"I tripped over a rock and hurt my knee." She cries and he hugs her. 

Y/N kisses her knee making her giggle before he kicks the rock away dramatically. 

"Stupid rock."

"My hero." He chuckles and helps her up just as her parents come outside. 

Peter picks her up and brings her inside to put a band-aid on her knee while Y/N runs back to his parents who were watching from the side. Macy picks Y/N up and brings him inside with Austin following. 

Y/N sits on the doorstep of his house with his arms around his legs and his head between his knees as he cries. Today is his birthday and none of the friends from school he invited showed up. Someone sits beside him, their small hand rubbing his back. 

"What's wrong?"

"No one came to my party." He turns to look at the person sitting beside him, it is Hailee.

"I wanted to but I had a family thing."

"I know." He wraps his small arm around her shoulder and pulls her into him as he kisses her head. "You're the only friend I need Hailee."
