Some disclaimer or basic info:
This is just how I personally see the chat when I think about them. You don't have to accept this as pure cannon. All in all you are allowed to interpret things however you want.
Another issue comes with the streamers/content creators feelings and opinions of it. Their feelings are always what comes first and my goal is to create something that not only we as chat member's can enjoy but the original content creator themselves.
Lastly I wanna apologize for not being good at typing or words. I have struggled with English and writing rules since I was much younger than I am now. I'm working on it so please be patient.

The concept of the chat being some sort of person that follows around the streamer has been an idea I have had for a long while and some people have shared this idea but channeled it into other creatures such as cats, bees, dogs, etc.
For me I have always pictured chat as a humanoid creature. In the beginning it was just a random ass child and since then it has evolved to being something else.
Similarly how every piece of art I make takes place in some sort of alternate universe parallel to our own chats are part of that lore.
The relationship between chat and streamer varies on what the streamer thinks.
Because Jabroni Mike's chat is one of the few chats that have an established design I'm going to use him as an example for the next part of the lore.
I will also be using Vinny's chat as an example of age and species between that chat's later.
Designs
The design of the chat varies from streamer to streamer but they usually follow the same line of species or design aspects of the streamer:
For example Mike's chat dresses similarly to Maskboy (their direct relationship with each other isn't really anything in any regard at this moment) and contains colours seen on Mike's mask which is an important staple to his aesthetic.
Some colours that will not be changed are his skin/hair colour (a white with a tint of purple), His eyes (a bright amber and deep purple), and his "ears" (same colour choices as the eyes but switching the sides instead.). As for his clothes, like many people chat's have multiple clothing options and the clothing is completely up to the scenario of the picture and the artist drawing the picture.
Added things by myself not only to the design of his chat but Mike's designs as a whole is an aspect of stars and space, as well a sense of regalness and formality. All of their designs follow that design aspect with some exceptions of casual clothing.
Species
Species
As said previously there are varied species and such. Chat's are not directly human at all nor are anyone in the artworks i create.
While some are humanoid in nature there are some aspects of them that are not human. Chat always reflects whatever species their streamer is.
Mike's species doesn't really have a name but the basic gist of it is they are some sort of alien species with mind set on stars and cum for some reason.
Some notable traits are brightly coloured eyes and being Italian for some reason.
Relationship to the streamer
As stated previously the relationship between the chat and the streamer varies per person and is completely up to the streamers preference and boundaries. It's important to make it clear that I do not in any way promote people making versions of a chat that makes the streamer uncomfortable in ANY WAY.
Chia (Mike's chat, short for Chiacchierare or chat in Italian) is going to be our example on how relationships can be. In the second painting submitted into the borru Mike claimed his chat as his son, be it with some hesitation, I then posted a little while after kinda cementing the fact that his chat is kinda like his own child.
Mike didn't deny this, he can in the future of course, so at least for now Chia is confirmed to have a father/son relationship with Mike.
This being said Mike is only one individual. Other individuals like Vinny have no confirmed relationship with his chat (DO NOT ASK HIM ABOUT IT).
Its important to note that relationships can only be confirmed by the streamer.
Relationship to other chats/characters
In general all of the chats have some sort of found family relationship with each other, with some exceptions of course.
Most of them consider each other family or family friends of each other. Generally romantic relationships between any of them are off the table for multiple reasons.
I believe most of the chats are too young to have healthy consensual relationships with each other without being directly influenced by outside sources on how their feelings work (IE straight people saying "is that your girlfriend" shit)
The idea of a romantic relationship between two chats may make the content creators in question uncomfortable.
Most of them are friendly with each other and will often play with each other or hang out in general.
Much like real like the older kids (11-14) generally like to hang out with each other and the younger kids (7-8) like to play with each other.
What the fuck happened to Vinny's shroom intena? Mike took a bite out of it to figure out if it would make him high or if it would poison him. It turned out to be poisonous.
The symptoms include: Vomiting, fever, loss of appetite, loss of weight and bone mass, and blindness if not treated quickly.
The cure for which is to eat a leaf from the bearer of the poison. Which was an easy fox for Mike. He still suffered though.
Random notes:
Chatyot is lactose intolerant.
MB has a strong allergy to peanuts.
Chia drinks only smoothies for breakfast, he rejects everything else.
Sake is on a plant based diet to control her diabetes.
Important relationship notes:
MB has a distance problem with Mike, most likely stemmed from his divorce to MB's mother.
MB has no connection to his mother and despises her, he describes her as selfish.
Chatyot doesn't have a positive relationship with Vinny, They both avoid each other like the plague.
Chia absolutely loves Mike and has a very healthy relationship with him.
Chia has a hard time getting along with his older brother.
Sake has the best and most healthy relationship with her guardian compared to all of the other chats.
