A loud crack echoed across the badlands as your body was thrown against the side of a high cliff. No sooner than you had collided with the rock face, you dropped to the ground below. You cast a weak cure spell and shakily stood up, taking in as much air as your shocked lungs could handle .
"Is that seriously the best you've got, _____?" Vanitas taunted, hunched over in an offensive stance and smirking in amusement. The many hours of intensive combat training and sparring didn't even seem to faze him. Not you. You were all cut up and bruised and you couldn't breathe.
"Just die already," you wheezed through heaping gasps of air, lungs shoving oxygen out as fast as you could suck it in. The blinding sun was directly behind him, casting his figure into shadow. Except his eyes. Those stupid, pretty, intelligent eyes glowed like embers. You couldn't look at them for the fear of losing control.
"Aw, you don't mean that," he cooed mockingly. "You would miss me too much."
"What idiot would miss you?" You scoffed. Cocky brat. Thinks he's so great. Usually his attitude could be tolerated- or even entertaining when directed at someone other than you- but not while having your butt handed to you.
"The same one that let me throw her into a cliff," he mused.
"Bite me."
"With pleasure."
"Ew, no!" You cringed. "Shut up already, boys like you are so gross!" Ignoring the stars still dancing around your head, you charged forward and readied the new sliding-dash blizzard-spell type move you'd been working on specially for this moment. Oh man, you could not wait to crush both his head and his oversized ego into dust. But as you got close enough to actually take a decent swing at him, the ground suddenly ran out from under you and everything went black.
Vanitas was mentally prepared to catch you, but was surprised by your dead weight paired with the force behind your new move. He slipped his arms under yours and closed them around your middle to keep you from dropping straight to the ground. You dropped anyways, taking him with you. Not that he was complaining. It's not every day that he had a beautiful girl pass out on him.
. . .
When you came to, you wanted to go back to wherever you just came from. You had a massive headache and your eyes hurt. Your feet, arms, and basically everything else hurt, too, now that you thought about it. But whatever you were using as a pillow sure was comfortable. And warm... But you didn't care. You shifted a little and snuggled up close to your headrest.
"Easy there, tiger," a smooth voice chuckled. You inhaled sharply and bolted up right. Everything blurred together, but you stayed conscious this time. Vanitas just laughed at you. He must've moved the both of you while you were out, cause now you were sitting in the shade of a high cliff.
"What happened to me?" You groaned as you tried to rub away the ache in your temples.
"You fainted straight into my arms." A smug grin stretched across his face. "You know, if you wanted my attention you didn't have to go to such extremes."
"As if I'd want your attention," you sassed, still salty about getting your butt kicked.
"Oh please," He smirked and twirled a lock of your hair around his fingers. "You can't keep lying to yourself."
"I'm not lying," you huffed and pulled your hair over one shoulder so he couldn't mess with it. As much as you enjoyed it, this was one battle you wouldn't let him win. "You're annoying."
"Annoying?" He let out a sarcastic laugh.
"Yes," you replied shortly. "Annoying, obnoxious, irritating, et cetera."
