"You watch that hand of yours, John Shelby."

"I'm trying to make it look real, love." He squeezed your waist. He loved this. He loved what you were doing. Pretending to be doing, you wanted to correct, reminding him that the only reason you got into this mess with him and not Tommy or Arthur was because you saw him first.

Your family was visiting from out of town and you'd been caught in this elaborate lie about a doting, perfect, sensible boyfriend. You couldn't stand the interrogation you received from them every phone call.
You wanted to talk about work, proud to be a Blinder, to have power. Your mother wanted to talk about wedding cakes and babies. They showed up unannounced wanting to meet this man that you've fallen head over heels for. Your father intended to glare him down, make him want to run away. Your mother needed to know his intentions. You wanted John's hand to stop from moving up your thigh.

"Try again and you'll be tasting my gun." You whispered under the commotion of your parents, siblings, cousins, aunts and uncles all catching up with one another.
Your tiny place had never been so stuffed, not even when the boys came over for impromptu meetings. They laughed and hugged and talked quite loudly about the handsome man you snatched up for yourself. John was having the time of his life. You would never hear the end of this, you were sure. Every joke from here on out would be at your expense. He could tell where you got your stubbornness from, your affectionate ways.
Your family really loved you, wanted the best for you, even if it was more than a little complicated. He was more than happy to do this, to play along. He was getting drinks and food and your mother just adores him. He was putting on a good act, telling them stories of your first date and trips to London so easily, effortlessly, you were almost buying into it. You owed him big after this and you knew he wouldn't forget that.
