Ring! The school bell rang for lunch. A stream of children trampled out of the classrooms and into the halls, eager to play with their friends. It was a hot summer day and school was coming to an end. Children could be heard laughing joyfully like wind chimes on the green grassy field. I slowly packed my lunch bag into my bag.
I exited my classroom, changed my shoes and stood silently in front of the room facing my class. Finally, the door opened and my friend Fiona emerged.
"So, uh, let's go," I said nodding toward the portable door. Fiona followed me out of the portables and onto the ramp-like porch.
Fidgeting with her fingers, she suddenly blurted out, "I have something to tell you. It's really important."
"Okay, tell me," I responded, scrunching my nose. Fiona was acting out of character.
After a moment, she hesitated and mumbled, "I'm moving to Coquitlam tomorrow and today's my last day in Toronto. My parents told me in April. Sorry."
Nodding my head to show I understood, I sunk down. Silently, a river of tears started streaming down my face as I remembered the years we spent together. My thoughts were running like a toy train.
