I watched the small version of Fugo pick up the books. Without thinking, I ran out from my hiding spot, and crouched down on the floor next to him. I began picking up some books as he noticed me.

"Who are you?" He asked. His voice sounded shy, and fragile. He obviously wasn't showing off his vulnerability, but he seemed a bit... Scared, I guess?

"My nam- Uh, I'm just a visitor. Sorry, I just noticed you were having trouble and wanted to help." I smiled at him as kindly as I could.

"I see... My name is Fugo, I'm sorry to bother you, but can you help me carry these books over there?" He pointed to a table with four chairs nearby. If this hadn't been the past, he and I would most likely have been joking about Mista right about now.

"So, Fugo was it? You seem pretty young to go to a..." I searched for the name in my head as I carried the books over to the table, setting them down gently. "...University."

"Oh, yeah. I have a high IQ so I got to skip a lot of years." He didn't look at me a lot as he spoke, only when he checked what I was doing.

"That must be hard..." I sat down on a chair, and he did the same. He didn't seem completely opposed to the idea of me keeping him company. "Is there anyone you get along with around here?"

"Not really... Or well, I guess Francesca is fine. She talks to me sometimes when I'm eating. She also helped me once when my profe- Uhm, when something happened." He stared down at the table, taking out a book to read.

"I understand... Does things like that happen... A lot?" I inquired, hoping I wasn't sounding too pushy about it.

"Yeah, but it's fine." Finally, he smiled faintly as he looked at me. My heart ached at the sight of this version of him. Seeing him like this, it just... It hurt me so much. Still, I knew why I was here.

"Fugo, you're a rather smart boy, right?" I vaguely glanced through one of the books as I spoke, so he didn't feel as pressured to look at me.

"Considering I'm at a university at the age of 13, yes. I suppose I am."

"Good... You see, I'm having a bit of a dilemma. Can I ask you a rather bizarre question?"

"Bizarre?" He looked up at me with a hint of curiosity. "Go ahead."

"I'm not sure if you've been asked this before, but I'd like to see what you'd do. So, imagine you're by a railroad. The rails separate into two different ones further ahead. There's a train coming, and you're standing next to the lever that controls the direction it heads into. On one railroad, there's five people tied up. On the other, there's only one, but they're someone you love dearly. The train tracks currently lead to the loved one. Would you let the train run over thr loved one? Or would you purposely kill fove people to save them?

I heard this question being asked a while ago, and figured it was a good metaphor. Fugo is my loved one. I could choose to save him, but risk changing our fate so we never met. I could also save our future, but witness Fugo being assaulted.

"Are you asking me what I'd do in that situation, or what the logical thing is?" He asked, after thinking for a moment.

"Both, I guess? Sorry, I know it's really weird." I stared down at the book in front of me.

"It's a metaphor, isn't it?"

"Yes." I nodded my head, not looking at the boy.

"Then I'd say the logical thing is to not pull the lever, killing the loved one. It's logical, because it would save yourself. You might think you'd be arrested for murder, but you won't. Since you didn't do anything, you didn't kill anyone. If you would have pulled the lever, you would have chosen to kill them. I don't really have any loved ones, but maybe if I did, I'd think differently. Maybe..." I noticed him holding back the tears. "...Maybe, if I had someone I loved, I'd kill the five people for them. I'd take the risk, live the rest of my life in prison for them."
