Emptiness, that was the prevalent feeling in this scenario; nothing else—just cold, dark emptiness. It could have been compared to many things, like the very cold and dark place that the world had turned into, but that distinctly notorious sensation that it gave felt, more than anything else, like exactly what it was—the end of a life.

It was twilight; nighttime was fast approaching and the day was nearing its end.

Part of the sky was still divided, with some shades of soft lilac and deep orange smeared, splashed and stretched across its rapidly darkening surface, but just as the setting sun’s final gaze at the world had faded away from view a few moments earlier, they too were about to pass on and dissolve into the inevitably noir hue of the night.

And as if to reassure everyone of that fact, a dark mass of clouds that had already begun wetting the earth announced its arrival with its seemingly sinister presence.

Death was only a passing, someone had once said. In this particular instance, that could have been a lie. Death was a reality. And someone else was living it.

The rain was cold and stinging and the winds blew with such force that they threatened to topple some of the ramshackle and nearly dilapidated buildings that populated the area. A flash of light shot through the dark mass of clouds and seconds later a loud boom bellowed across the skyscape.

But he couldn’t feel or hear any of it. He did, however, get the vague impression of a soothing voice of entreaty calling out to him from the direction of the lady who was kneeling on the opposite side of the body. But whether it was in fact real or just a trick played on him by his currently unstable mind, it made no difference.

To him, time had lost its meaning and as a result he became completely unaware of his surroundings. He just continued staring at the lifeless body that lay before him as the blood puddle from underneath, which had already stained and gone past his knees and was slowly being washed away by the rain, slowed its flow.

All the color in the world seemed to fade away in pallor, turning the surroundings into an enveloping expanse of grey interspersed with dark masses slowly looming through the background. And as the boy knelt there, feeling utterly dejected and nearly out of phase with reality in unknowable grief, all he could think about were the last words he had just heard.

Hidora…don’t forget.

His voice was weak and shaky as he spoke and some blood had made its way to his mouth, but despite that or because of it, he continued.

Life’s too short…to live someone else’s dreams. Don’t let this be the end of you. Be your own man. Find your own happiness…and find it your way.

He had then looked to the feminine figure kneeling beside him. She looked distraught, with fear and worry riddled across her face, her body quaking uncontrollably and her bright blue eyes already welling up with tears.

Straining to gather up what little strength he had left, he gave her a nod with a stern look of determination in his eyes. Instinctively interpreting the meaning behind the gesture and understanding that this was his dying wish—a solemn charge, a bequethal of responsibility, she looked to the boy, her eyes slightly widening in mild surprise, and then back at him.

Only now fully grasping and accepting the entirety of the request, all she could do was nod back in reply in an equally solemn fashion, trying to blink back tears but to no avail.

He had then looked back to Hidora and after what had been a shared moment of silent contemplation between the two, he finally gave his signature grin-and-wink as a final sign-off as if to say, Sorry, Hidora. This is goodbye for now, before succumbing to his wounds and breathing his last.
