I have been in New York for 1 week now, and I have now officially got a job which is very comforting. Ironically enough the only place that was willing to hire me was the starbucks that I first went earlier that week.

I enter the starbucks and am greeted by the manager.

“Hi Athena, we are so happy to have you with us at starbucks. Here is your uniform you can put it on in the change room near the crew room” She exclaims enthusiastically and points me in the direction of the change rooms while handing me a bundle of black clothes and a green apron.

I make my way through the front area and take a mental picture of everything’s position in the store. I find the change room and slip on my black shirt and pants, then tie up my green apron from the back.

“Things are different now, your different now” I whisper to myself as I stare at the girl looking back at me in the mirror. I take a deep breath and exit the change room.

After about a 30 minute tutorial of where everything is and how it all works, I was making my first ever coffee whilst being employed at starbucks. A Hazelnut Latte for a middle aged business women named Angela, who by the tapping of foot yet still displaying politeness in her voice was late for a meeting. I guess you could say I know people and their behaviours well.

My shift was only for an 5 hours which isn’t to bad, I am getting paid $15.00 an hour so that’s $75 which is good for one shift if I don’t say so myself.  I had10 minutes left when a group of teenagers came into the store giggling. I sigh for the overly happy people, sometimes I still have to remind myself that I am still a teenager. Someone in the group caught my eye though, he was at the back of the group with a sad smile on his face. The kind where you want to be happy where you are but still aren’t happy there, I knew this smile very well. I had perfected it for that matter.

“Hi welcome to starbucks, what can I get for you today?” I put on a fake enthusiastic smile and an overly sweet voice.

“Hi, Can we get a 2 Chocolate Latte’s, 1 Caramel Frappe, 1 Chocolate Frappe. Tyler what did you want?” The blonde girl with an acceptable amount of make up on asked the boy with the sad smile who now has a name.

“Nothing thanks Crystal”  He smile politely at the blonde girl.

“Well that will be $18.54” The girl goes rummaging through her bag to find her wallet.

I can feel a pair of eyes of my, I turn to see Tyler looking at me with a puzzled look on his face. Usually I am very good at reading people but the reason why he was looking at me with such a puzzled expression on his face was even a mystery to me.

“Here you go” Crystal handed me the money as her and the rest of her friends went to go sit down in one of booths.

I get my head stuck into making all their drinks knowing I only had 5 minutes left of my shift.

“Australian?” I look up to  see Tyler.

“Yes?” I say cautiously not exactly sure on how to reply to that.
