For as long as Ruby could remember, she had been a spy. She had grown up in the Red Room at a very young age. She lived with her parents, Aubrey, a former black widow, and Aurella, an undercover S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, on the outskirts of Ohio. One night, eleven-year-old Ruby heard her mother talking when she tried to get a drink from the fridge. She hid on the stairs, listening to them. Unknown to Ruby, this would change her life forever. As Ruby eavesdropped, she discovered that her parents were discussing a dangerous mission involving a notorious criminal organization. Intrigued by the conversation, Ruby's curiosity and determination grew stronger, fueling her desire to follow in her parents' footsteps and become a spy herself. Little did she know that this pivotal moment would set her on a path filled with thrilling adventures and unexpected challenges.
"Aurella, I don't want her to go through the same thing I did... I want her to have a life outside that awful place. I would love for her to grow up and have a family of her own one day... We both know that will never happen if she graduates from there." Aurella listened intently, understanding the weight of her friend's words. She realized that her own desire for her daughter to become a spy was driven by her own experiences and ambitions, rather than considering what would truly make her happy. With a heavy heart, Aurella made the difficult decision to support her daughter's dreams of a different future, knowing that it would mean letting go of her own aspirations for her.
"Aubrey, we knew that this day would come... It's been six years since she came to us. It was our mission. We remained undercover until she was ready. But I have the plan to get her out of the Red Room when she's old enough-" Aurella said, her voice filled with determination. "We will ensure that she has the freedom to pursue her own path, away from the constraints of the Red Room. It's time for us to fulfill our mission and give her the chance at a brighter future."
Aurella explained before she hesitated, hearing a small gasp from the staircase. She cursed under her breath, knowing Ruby had heard their conversation. "What are you doing up, Rube's?" Aurella asked, trying to hide her surprise. Ruby's wide eyes met Aurella's, filled with a mix of curiosity and fear. "I couldn't sleep," Ruby whispered, her voice barely audible. Aurella took a deep breath, realizing that their secret plan had been exposed sooner than expected. She knew they had to be honest with Ruby and reassure her that they were only trying to protect her.
"What are you doing up... And why are you talking about the Red Room? You said I wasn't going to go back there. You said I'd be safe with you two!" Ruby began to panic as she spoke to her parents, who fell silent. "Ruby, listen to us... we all knew this day would come when you would have to go back... but don't worry. We have a plan to get you out of there when the time is right. When you're almost 17. That's when we'll help you escape. Understand?" Ruby's parents exchanged a glance before her mother spoke softly, "We've been working tirelessly to ensure your safety, Ruby. The Red Room is a dangerous place, but we promise that we will do everything in our power to protect you until the day comes for your escape."
Ruby nodded softly as she joined her parents in the living room. With a defeated sigh, she spoke. "When do we have to leave?" she asked softly, looking up at both agents as the two gave each other a look. "At any time. Come on and get ready. I'll explain the plan on the way there." Ruby's heart sank at the mention of leaving, but she knew there was no other choice. She quickly gathered her belongings, her mind racing with questions about where they were going and why it had to be so sudden. As they walked towards the door, she couldn't help but wonder what kind of danger awaited them outside their familiar home.
With a look of fear and sadness in her eyes, Ruby grabbed her shoes before meeting her mother outside in the car. "So, what's the plan?" she asked out loud as they began driving along the quiet road. "Since I work for the Red Room, I'll be there anyway, but you must keep this a secret and tell nobody. Especially Krogan. The leader of the Red Room. If he finds out about any of this, he won't hesitate to kill us. I'll be able to watch over you while Aurella tells SHIELD about the plan.
