August walked across the school yard and into a small alleyway, the air bitter and cold. He wrapped his jacket tighter around himself, wrapping one of his hands in his sleeve. He kept his eyes on his book. “Anxiety”. It was a cute love story, but it was very- His thoughts were cut off by someone yanking him by his hair. He let out a short cry before he hit the ground with a thud.

“Oh?” a fake sweet voice filled his ears. He looked up to see piercing amber eyes staring straight into his. Paloma. He tried to back away but she still had one hand in his hair. She picked up his book and turned to the first few pages and August felt himself die inside.

“When anyone looks at me, I get a tight knot in my stomach, but when he looks at me, it feels as though the rope was pulled hard enough to snap, and vibrations fill my chest.” She giggled as she read it, turning to stare at him. Paloma opened her mouth but she was cut off.

“Wow, I didn’t know you could read.” August sneered, only to wince as Paloma’s nails dug into his scalp. She pulled his head up and gently touched the white spot in his hair.

“Nobody’s ever going to love you,” she lent down and whispered. “Not even your soulmate.” With that she moved to the side, motioning to one of her guy friends. He strutted over and punched Augest in the face with no hesitation. August groaned and went limp, before Paloma let go of his hair and let him fall back against the wall.

“Bye bye, Auggy.” she said, squatting in front of him before taking off and giggling with her friends. August felt something warm drip down his lip before he eventually felt darkness overcome him. The last thing he remembered was his mother shouting his name from the parking lot before waking up in the hospital.

In a world where soulmates are found by one's unique trait, it is not hard to find true love. Though, it is not often that a soulmate is declined, or, simply, abandoned. Even when true love is handed to you on a silver platter, people still decline because they just can’t handle commitment. Not everyone can accept the fact that their soulmates are perfect for them, though, most people who think like this tend to have many insecurities.
