I'm not even sure how I ended up here. Driving north I was heading for "Camp Au Sable'' where my family has a reunion every Halloween. We rent cabins for a few days and catch up over the fire but I usually just keep to myself and catch up on my books. I decided to drive alone this year since I had just got my license and haven't driven that far yet alone but my mom agreed that I would just be driving behind her anyways. As we got closer to grayling I knew to follow I-75 GRAYLING not M-72. I've heard horror stories of people accidentally taking M-72 and never making it back to the main roads. And even worse, Pere Cheney. Pere Cheney neighbors, or used to, neighbor Grayling but Graying flourished while Pere Cheney was wiped out. It's rumored to be the most haunted town in Michigan and if you end up there, there's no getting out. My mom was always very careful to take the right exit. The drive was going good but I really didn't like the song playing so I pulled out my phone to skip it quickly and as I looked up I saw I was heading for "M-72 MIO ''.
"crap!!," I exclaimed, hitting my steering wheel, "Okay it's fine I'll just drive over the median I can't go any further." as I turned my Grand Prix towards 75 hoping it was not too late. I floored it but my car just stopped. No crash. No barrier. Just stopped. My engine was still on and my car was in drive but when I tried to move I could only reverse... towards M72. I started to accept my fate as my car drove without my help. I thought maybe I could just jump out. But I was going 70mph. I also considered turning my car off but after a few tries I gave up when my brake would not move and my keys were cemented into the ignition. My last option was to crash my car, I hated to but I had to get out. Somehow I was able to move my steering wheel enough that I crashed into a tree causing my door to crumple and I made my way out. In  my state of shock I wandered off hoping to get back on path. I followed signs that said "75 N Grayling". Obviously hoping I could get back to my mom. But next thing I know I'm at a lake surrounded with vacant cabins painted in mossy vines. I open one with hopes of someone. Anyone.
  "Hey!"
I heard as I opened a creaky cabin door, I jumped and saw a poorly looking man, thin and dirty.
"Hey! How'd you get it? This is my land. You'll regret this," he told me in a threatening tone.
"I'm sorry sir, I honestly don't know, I took the wrong exit, crashed and now I'm here I just want to be with my mom I promise," I said as my voice shook. I could feel the burn in my throat warning me of my own tears. I just wanted to be with my family, I wanted to be safe.
"Oh that's so sweet, but you found yourself on my land, so now you'll pay the price," he explains as he makes his way closer to me, I find myself backed into a tree and his hands are on my arms,"you can get out, if you survive me."
He takes his hands off me and I think I'm free to get out, but of course, I am not. I decided my safest option was to lock myself into a cabin until the sun goes down and then I can run in the dark and hopefully if I make it out of the gates I can make it to a safe place. Back to the normal universe.
Night time falls. I can't say how long I waited in this cabin because I lost my phone in my car but it felt like days. I know though that its October 30th. So, when the sun rises it's Halloween and I'll do anything to be back with my family. I crept quietly out of my solitude, trying to tiptoe around the fall leaves and as I approached the exit gates I felt my shoulders being grabbed as I was dragged to the ground. It was him. He didn't say anything though as he dragged me for what felt like a mile and we ended up at the edge of the lake. Next thing I know, I'm underwater and my chest feels like there's a mountain weighing it down when I can't make it to the surface. Something in me snapped and I had so much power in me. I couldn't let this old loser keep me away from my mom. I got to the surface and with everything in me I threw rocks at him until he was pleading for me to stop and next thing I knew I had escaped and made it back to my car. I kept spare keys under the backseat. I pulled them out and despite the crumbled door I sped away towards my family, towards the universe. I floored it to 90. Anything to break through this hell.
