blaire collins
Holy crap.
I was 99.9% positive I saw a zombie. The other 0.01% thought it was just another basic chick trying to attack me. But I'm pretty sure it was a zombie.
I ran into the girl's locker room—knowing Layla would be hiding there—and shut the door. Coach Brinn kept her keys on the whiteboard, so I grabbed them and locked the door. Immediately, the doorknob started shaking. I backed up and found the supply closet, immediately smiling with relief and hiding inside. "Layla," I hissed. "Layla!" I said again, louder this time. From behind a punching bag, Layla's dark brown ponytail swung as she poked her head out to see me. She was worried for a split second, before she saw me and sighed of relief.
"Blaire, thank God. Katie tried to attack me."
I nodded. "She's a zombie, too? So's Grant." Layla blinked.
"Zombie? I knew there was something wrong with her. Dang, she was really cool." I nodded in agreement, and as we heard the door to the locker room bust open, we jumped and looked at each other. I immediately walked up to the large vent with the loose door and knelt onto one knee. "Not the time, Blaire. We're better off as—" She started.
I interrupted, "Dummy, I'm not proposing. Get on my hand, get into the vent."
"Gross, what?"
"Get in the vent. Do you want to die, or live to brag to Charlie about how you're still living your best life without him?"
"Valid. Boost me up." Layla stepped on my palm. Even if she was lighter than me, I was still weak, so my arms shook as I hoisted her up into the vent. It was then that the supply door was shaking. They were trying to break in. I gasped and jumped onto a shelf, using it as a stool to climb into the vent. I sat at the opening of the vent, and as soon as the zombies burst through the door, I kicked down the shelf, making sure they wouldn't be able to get in. I closed the vent door behind me and joined Layla. "Took you long enough," She said.
"You're the one that needed a boost."
We slowly made our way down the vent. There was a cool, blue light shining through the other side, but there was a dark silhouette sitting in front of the door. I ran up and grabbed the shirt from behind, revealing the face of Carson Stewart. "Ow, ow, ow, STOP IT!" He yelped.
I said, "You seem alive. Physically. Good enough," and let go. Carson rubbed his back and stood up as much as he could in the vents. "What are you doing in here?"
"Thea attacked me. She's abnormally strong. And fast. So I ran."
I nodded. I was sure he also knew about the zombies, so I said nothing. Layla looked back at the vent door. There was banging. "We have to go. Quick."
She beckoned me and Carson to the other side, and I shoved open the vent door. Nearly falling, I grabbed onto the edge of the door for balance. I nodded to the other two, telling them it was clear, when we jumped down and saw it. The pool.
The chlorine was glowing, showing the zombies under the water. They were sleeping. Their pale blue, veiny faces were clear to see under the water. I gulped. "Gross." Layla scrunched up her nose in her way that meant she was disgusted. I saw dark green, large leaves growing on the wall and ceiling. They weren't there before, but I recognized these leaves. My dad watched a documentary on a zombie apocalypse a few months ago. The documentary stated that, if a zombie apocalypse were to ever happen, the antidote would include those leaves. I took a step to go around the pool, but thats when I saw it; a small gated area blocking both sides of the pool, preventing us from going around. We would have to go through.
