"Dad, come on, I'm too old for this!" I laughed, picking up the soccer ball. He paused. "Aww, really?" "Nope!" I drop-kicked it over his head, laughing. "Oh, dang, Rainbear, into the road!" He chuckled, hopping over the chipped fence and jogging toward the ball. "Look out!" I could barely hear the voice from down the road, the sound of an engine rushing towards him. "Dad? DADDY!"
SLAM. "Rainbear? W-what's happening? RAINBEAR?!" That was the last thing I heard from him.
I wiped tears from my eyes as I pushed past Mr. Haywood. I rested my hand on the door for a moment. "You don't understand anything," I growled, straightened my back, and smiled. "So don't pretend to." I opened the door and walked over to my desk. "Hey, Sunshine, can I borrow your notes? I forgot to take mine." Sophie grinned, holding out her hand. I nodded, handing her the sheet of paper. "Hey, what happened with the teacher?" She asked in a quieter voice. "O-Oh, nothing!" She narrowed her eyes, and I hoped she couldn't tell I was lying. "Ok! Anywho, August is gonna meet us at lunch, and after school we were thinking about seeing a movie." She said as she copied down the information on her own paper. "Sorry, me and my brothers are hanging out after school today! Maybe next time?"
My friend sighed, putting her pencil down and looking into my eyes. "Seriously? All you've done since the accident is hang out with your boring, annoying brothers! C'mon, hang out with your friends that love you, Sunshine!" I winced. "They're not...that bad..." I murmured. "What was that? You have something to say Rainbear?" She hissed, grabbing my wrist firmly. "It's not a big deal, Sophie!"
The bell rang, and Sophie glared into me. Something clicked in her eyes. "Jeez, Sunshine, just saying that soon, if this keeps up, we won't be friends anymore. Then what'll you have, JJ? I'm just lookin out for you," she walked out of the classroom, leaving me to think. Maybe I was hanging out with my brothers too much.
I headed to second period, groaning. Five more to go.
The next periods went by relatively quickly, like science and chemistry and whatnot, until it finally time to meet my friends at lunch. I sat down at our usual table, across from August. They glanced at me, waved, then went back to rummaging through their lunchbox. Sophie sat down beside them, grinning at me. "JJ!" A familiar voice called from behind me. I moaned, right as Townes sat down beside me, and Devin on the other side. "Ok, I know you'd like to be alone with your friends," Devin began, placing a hand on my shoulder. "We wanted to say hi and uh, well, you looked kinda upset earlier and we want you to know we're here for you." He smiled softly, and Townes hugged me quickly. "Thanks, guys."
Maybe I could wait a bit to go to the movies with my friends, why do that instead of spending time my only family available?
