AFTERTASTE CHAPTER TWO
NADIA HATED SILENCE. It had always been the one thing she truly detested. Ironically enough, since her arrival at the Mikaelson compound, silence had become all she knew. Freya had put her back to sleep. (Nadia had allowed it.) It was just because she had freaked out a tad bit after she saw Hope. (Not the dangerous kind of freak out. More like the kind of freak out that made your brain shut down.) She could admit that she had overreacted a bit. It had all just felt like a slap to the face.
Nadia's baby dying had been the stressor that finally broke her. It had taken her months to be able to even get out of bed. The realization that Klaus had had a baby, successfully, with someone else... She felt obsolete. How was it that she was still suffering, and they had all moved on? Not to mention, Klaus and Elijah had loved the baby's mother. As much as she was in pain herself, her heart ached for them. They didn't allow themselves to love easily, not anymore.
Maybe fate was wrong.
Rebekah had come to visit her a few times. She'd talk to her through the door. Nadia hadn't really answered though. She hadn't felt up to talking. She loved Rebekah more than anything, don't get her wrong. She just had no energy left. If anything, Rebekah was the only small bit of light in a very dark tunnel.
Now that she was awake and had regained some of her composure, Nadia felt as though the only choice that made sense would be to leave. Again. They didn't need her here. And she had proved that she didn't need them either. You could love someone and not need them. You could love someone and keep your distance.
Currently, she was examining the room she had been placed in. It was nice, but it wasn't her own. She didn't waste time wondering what had happened to it. Windows were a safe exit, right? If she could reach it, that is. Why did she have to be so small?
Taking the pillows out of a chair, she dragged it over to the window and stood atop it. The sun was bright. It should have burned. In fact, it should have killed her. But thanks to the daylight ring... At least she could feel the sunshine still. Its warmth was always comforting. Even when she was alive, feeling the sun's warmth against her tanned skin had been a welcome thing. It made her feel whole. The daylight ring had been a gift from Kol, after he'd turned her. She was grateful for it. A bit, anyway. Feeling the sunshine was the only thing left from her human life.
It was the only thing that made her feel alive.
Turning Nadia had been a selfish act on Kol's part. He knew that. He could admit to it. He'd loved her, so he had kept her instead of setting her free. That was all there was to it. If Naria had been a butterfly, Kol had pinned her wings down instead of nursing them back to full health. She didn't resent him for it, not anymore. She would have died. Because of Kol's selfish act, she got to see incredible things, travel to places she'd never imagined. She got to see empires rise and fall. When everything was said and done, she'd have lived a full and adventurous life.
