Michael

Michael was always quite a shy boy. He'd always struggled to make friends at school. It didn't help that he was short for his age (only 5 foot 7 inches at 18 years old), he wasn't sporty, wasn't particularly funny, wasn't particularly handsome. If you passed him in the street you would barely notice him.

His mum (Claire) was always worried about him not fitting in and not finding his place. His twin sister Chloe was a real girly girl and didn't have much in common with Michael. They got on well but didn't hang out much. His father passed away when he was young, so he never really knew him.

But perhaps Michael's luck was about to change. He had secured a place at university, and was due to start in September. Was this his chance? He could start new. Make new friends. Reinvent himself.

Before he could head off to university, he had a long summer to fill. Without any friends, Michael was likely to spend the whole summer in his room playing video games or reading. The thought of this didn't appeal to Claire. She wanted her son to learn some vital life lessons before heading off to university and thought it would be great to get him to help out in her shop over the summer. Interacting with the customers would improve his social skills, and he could earn a bit of money to refresh his wardrobe and make a good impression on his first days at university. Plus, Chloe worked at the shop over the summer, so it would be a good opportunity for some brother sister bonding.

Claire had been running her own Bridal Boutique (called Blushing Brides) for years now. Her shop catered for everything. She sold shoes, accessories, bags, flowers, beauty services (on site nail bar, makeup studio and salon), and most importantly of all - dresses. Brides from all over came to her shop for the brilliant variety of exquisite dresses.

To Claire it was a no brainer. Michael should join her in the shop for 3 months before heading off to university. Besides, it was a very busy period for her so she could definitely use the help.

Claire was quite a bossy mother, and Michael quite a timid boy, so there was no arguing from Michael. Goodbye a summer of waking up at midday and playing video games. Instead he'd be working at a bridal shop all summer. At least he'd get a bit of money and it would all be over soon.

That's what he thought at least. It turns out that what happened that summer would have more of an effect on his life than he or his mum could ever have imagined.
