Three Monthes Ago: June 10th
(Chrissa's POV)
The clock was ticking excruciatingly slowly on the wall of my trigenometry classroom and I counted the seconds in my head. The fact that school ended for the year in less than twenty minutes and we were still doing math-related schoolwork was ridiculous, but not a huge surprise. Mr. Hansen sat behind his desk at his laptop while the room full of juniors pretended to work on the "fun" trig worksheet he had handed out. I tapped my pencil against my desk, squirming in my seat. The room was too hot due to our school's crappy ventilation and my legs were sticking together in my short shorts I had worn in celebration of my last day as a 10th grader. The last thing I wanted to do was sit here. I wanted to find Genna and Eleanor and run as fast as I could out of this place.
"You can pack up now." Mr. Hansen said, standing up. I jumped out of my chair like it was on fire and started shoving books into my tote.
When the loud sound of the bell filled the school, the room went crazy. Kids screamed and yelled, pushing out of the classroom and into the hall in a wave. I grinned, pushing my way through the crowd to the doors. As soon as the heat of the Jersey Shore in June hit me, it finally clicked in my head. "This is summer. This is three months of unadulterated fun in LBI with my best friends. This is life as a teenager as it's meant to be lived." I grinned again and headed to my car.
"Hey, Chrissa!" I turned as I heard Eleanor's familiar voice calling my name. She was tripping through the crowds across the student parking to lot where I stood, leaning against my busted-up old yellow mini van. Genna was following close behind.
"Ready to blow on out of here?" I said with a smile, pulling open the door and hopping into the front seat. I started the car as Genna climbed into the front seat and Ellie got into the back.
"I don't think I've been more ready for anything in my life." Eleanor smiled. "We're free."
"In just four hours, all five of us will be back at the beach. And we'll have the most awesome summer ever!" Genna said.
"Speaking of all five of us, we need to swing by and pick up the criminals." I said, putting my foot on the gas and pulling out of the crowded parking lot, nearly running down some freshmen guys. "They get out today, and I said I'd go get them."
"Right. Okay." Eleanor said. We fell into our normal car routine: I rolled down all the windows and the sunroof, Elle turned up the sterio so crackling pop music blared through the car, and Genna rooted around in the glove compartments for food. I leaned back in my seat, hands on the steering wheel and a whole summer of crazy, fun opportunities stretched out ahead of me like the highway we were driving on.
