The wind is cold against your face as you trek through the woods, and toward the outskirts of town.

Adjusting the pack on your back, you sigh. It's been a long day of patrols, you and your partner for the day, some new rookie that hardly knew how to shoot a gun got jumped by a group of clickers, and you had to take them out almost single-handedly.
'Wouldn't have had to do it myself if Ellie had f*cking showed up.' You think with a little more than a twinge of annoyance. God, she could be so annoying sometimes.

You check in at the gate and make your way back to the house you and a few of the other residents around your age stay. It's an old two-story with faded blue paint, white trimmed windows, and a crumbling brick wall out front.

"Hey, uh," a nervous voice says from behind you, you groan internally before turning around. "Yeah?" The recruit shuffles his feet nervously before speaking. "Sorry again about today, I guess I was just off my game or something." You force a smile onto your face, "no problem, just don't let it happen again."

You turn around and keep walking. "I don't know what happened, I just got caught by surprise, I swear I'm usually way better." You close your eyes and sigh, there's nothing you would like better than to go home and take off your filthy clothes and relax.

"really, forget about it ok?" "But-" you cut him off with a salute and keep walking without turning around.

"God d*amnit Ellie, couldn't you have just f*cking shown up today?" You mutter under your breath.

Honestly, it's not that big of a deal, and you don't know why you're making it one. Usually it wouldn't bother you this much, people have stuff and sometimes they need to skip a patrol to do that, heaven knows you have plenty of times. and if anyone else had done it then it wouldn't have mattered.

But it wasn't just "anyone else," this was Ellie we were talking about. For the past few weeks, ever since your...dream, everything about her seemed to annoy you. The way she never takes anything seriously. how when you ask her things, she sometimes just smiles and walks away. How you find her randomly staring at you, but looking away if you ever meet her eyes. The way her hair falls into her eyes, the urge to brush it away. How she was always taking your patrol shifts, leaving you with nothing to do for the day. How she insists on washing to dishes at the home, never letting you do it. How she nibbles at her bottom lip when she focuses-

'Stop that,' you think, 'Just stop.' You shouldn't even be focusing on her right now, you're supposed to be going home.
You hop up the few steps, and through the front door. "I'm home!" You shout up the stairs and are met with silence. Doesn't matter. You prefer the house to be empty. You go upstairs and drop your bags at the foot of your bed before heading to the shower.

You stand under the hot water for a good twenty minutes, letting the hot water rinse away the dirt and blood that splatters your arms and face before shutting off the water.

You towel off before wrapping yourself in it and stepping into your room. You slip on a pair of blue jeans and pull a simple white button-up shirt over your head. You begin buttoning up your shirt, and you let your mind wander.

Unbidden, an image of Ellie pops up, her green eyes sparkling, and a small smile on her lips. Your mind wanders to your dream again.

A hand around your waist,
Butterflies fluttering in your stomach and your heart pounding in your chest.
Body's pressed close,
A hand slips under your shirt-

"Hey there."
You nearly jump out of your skin.
A chuckle. "Sorry, didn't mean to scare you y/n."

It's as if she was summoned by your thoughts. You turn bright red and turn around, buttoning the remaining buttons.
