My Sunshine

Rei's world was crumbling around him.

Doctors and nurses rushed in, phrases like "...fatal wounds" and "nothing can be done..." He was told to exchange final words, if the man in front of him ever woke up.

Could Nagisa even be called a man? So childish and energetic for someone nearing his thirties, he had hardly been able to experience any of the things the pair had dreamed of.

And it seemed that he wouldn't be able to. Rei still could not seem to process, as he watched through shining eyes the frail, hardly breathing figure with countless bandages and stitches and tubes poking here and there, that this could very well be Nagisa's end.

Why? Why was life so cruel? Nagisa and Rei had not even yet begun to scratch the surface of their future, see all sorts of sights and go on all sorts of adventures together. And there was one particular adventure Rei looked forward more than anything.

He planned to propose on their anniversary next month. A relaxing, candle lit dinner outside an extravagant restaurant, being able to see Nagisa's beautiful eyes glow, his heart skipping a beat as he muttered the words, "Yes, Rei-chan, yes!"

Now, Rei longed to just be able to see Nagisa's beautiful eyes one more time, hear his adorable voice say his name again. He wanted his Nagisa back and it wasn't fair that he was being taken away from him too soon when he hadn't been able to do the things he wanted to do or say the things he wanted to say.

Slowly, Rei lifted a hand that had been clenched in his lap and intertwined his finger's with Nagisa's. They were cold, too cold. Rei checked once again to see if Nagisa was breathing, and he was, just ever so faintly.

Suddenly he felt Nagisa's fingers tighten around his hand.

"N-Nagisa? Are you waking up?"

Slowly, Nagisa opened his brilliant maroon eyes, lazily scanning the situation around him, his eyes stopping at the tubes and bandages in his arms. Rei could see in the way his small smile faltered that he knew exactly what was happening.

And then his smile came back.

"Rei-chan? I'm feeling a little sleepy..." he grinned weakly. "Would you mind singing me a song to help me fall asleep?"

Rei's eyes widened at his request. "S-sing? O-of course I can... What would you like me to sing for you Nagisa-kun?"

Nagisa paused for a moment, pondering, his bottom lip falling slightly. "How about that one you sang to me on our first date? Remember, when we sat under the trees? I laid there with my head in your lap all cozy and you started to sing..."

Rei could feel tears stinging at his eyes. Of course he remembered. He remembered every detail clearly. The tree they leaned against, the way the wind blew gently, carrying flower petals with it on its sweeping breeze. He remembered the softness of Nagisa's hair as he ran his fingers through it gently. It had been so serene, Rei had realized more than anything that day that he was meant to be with Nagisa for the rest of his life.

Rei nodded, gripping Nagisa's hand tightly. Nagisa let his head fall back on his pillow, but kept his eyes on Rei strongly, as if he was the only thing he cared about. Rei realized with a jolt that perhaps Nagisa wanted Rei to be the last thing he ever saw.

With this thought in mind, Rei began to sing.

"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine

You make me happy when skies are grey

You never know, dear, how much I love you

Please don't take my sunshine away,"

As Rei sang, he ran his thumb along the back of Nagisa's hand, holding it tenderly. Nagisa hummed along with him, the words etched into his mind as clearly as they were in Rei's.

"The other night, dear, as I lay sleeping

I dreamt I held you in my arms

When I awoke, dear, I was mistaken

So I hung my head, and I cried,"

Rei's voice cracked a bit as he watched Nagisa's faint smile weaken. He could see the energy and brightness Rei had come to be so familiar with begin to fade. Please don't leave me now! Rei wanted to scream. But, as always, some things were just inevitable.

"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine

You make me happy when skies are grey

You never know, dear, how much I love you

Please don't take my sunshine away,"

Nagisa's hand grew colder inside Rei's. His gaze never faltered, however, and neither did Rei's. So many words they could have said, should have said, were being clearly expressed in their eyes. They both knew, now, how little time they truly had.

"I'll always love you and make you happy

If you will only say the same

But if you leave me to love another,

You'll regret it all one day,"

Rei's heart would always belong to Nagisa. And Nagisa's would always belong to Rei. It was almost like they exchanged their vows now, an eternal promise taken with them forever. No words were necessary. Rei could already see the light draining from Nagisa's eyes, his face somehow even paler than before.

"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine

You make me happy when skies are grey

You never know, dear, how much I love you

Please don't take my sunshine away,"

Nagisa's eyes began to close, slowly, and Rei's heart wrenched. He gripped Nagisa's hand harder, a pleading expression on his face. Nagisa merely smiled back. "I love you, Rei-chan," he murmured quietly.

"I love you too, Nagisa-kun," he replied as always, although this time he meant it more than ever. The hand in his fell limp, the pulse in Nagisa's veins disappearing. He could hear machines buzzing, his monitor flatlining.

"Please don't take my sunshine away..."
