CHAPTER TWO
__________________________
I glide gently through the night sky, pushing down with my wings occasionally to keep a good distance off the ground. I scout my territory just in case a sister was lost or a hunter was nearby.
I look down at the tall grass waving in the breeze and breathe in the clean air around me.
Nothing seemed to be out of sort, if anything it was going to be another peaceful night.
I thought back to my earlier conversation with Aeris. She didn't know what she was in for with the Menders. They can be extremely difficult to work with...
I look down and notice a youngling wandering about the fields below me. Her wings were huge for her size and she was taller than any youngling I've ever seen. What was she doing waltzing about in the open like that?
She looks up in the sky and spots me soaring above her. She does a strange waving motion, asking me to come down to her. I'd never before seen this sister and wasn't sure if I should go down to her or not.
But a sister was a sister. Even if I've never met her, so I bring my wings in and prepare to decent when I spy something out of the corner of my eye.
A sleek metallic box slips quietly into the field and heads towards the youngling. By the looks of it I immediately know it's a group of hunters
"Quick get off the ground!" I shout to the youngling as I push down hard on my wings to gain altitude.
"Can't...fly..." She shouts back.
The metallic box gains speed.
They were going to take her and there was nothing I could do, unless...
"Run away! I need some time and then we can travel out of here!"
The youngling turned and began to run away from the hunters. Her long legs propelling her faster than I expected.
Okay, think Arielle. She's to big to travel but you have to try anyways. With her size I'll have to focus on just getting out of here, and less about location.
I stretched my arms out and began to concentrate on what the Menders had taught me.
A tingly feeling spread over me as my body became more and more like mist.
The youngling below kept running as the hunters got closer to her. I heard their shouts of excitement, but I ignored them so I could concentrate on traveling.
A black mist surrounded me and a heavy weight filled my hands as I tore through the sky. My vision turned purple and black and I looked down to see the youngling illuminating a bright pink color.
The hunters were gaining fast and by then had noticed me soaring above them. I heard confusion in their deep voices. It was now or never
I pulled my wings in tight and shot down fast towards the youngling, my body getting heavier and heavier with each passing second. She kept running so I angled myself to ram into.
She looked up in the sky to find me but was in for a shock when I slammed into her back.
With a bright flash the ground disappeared beneath us, and for a millisecond or so we were left suspended in nothing.
I heard shouts of anger coming from a long distance away, but they couldn't get us now.
Then everything went black.
