Unwanted

Chapter Ten

Sunset and Sundance were doing well. Until it happened. It was tragic, really. I was even depressed about it.

It started about two weeks after Sundance was born. The gohper's were starting to come out for the spring, bringing their holes with them. We were out in the pasture on a bright, sunny spring day, when Sunset suddenly fell, face planting into the soft grass.

"Ouch!" She yelped, trying to get up. I trot over to her.

"What happened?" I ask her.

"I-I fell into a gopher hole. I can't get up. My leg.... it hurts so much." She says, tears threating to fall from her eyes. I turn to the big house, and call for Alma. Minutes later, Will and Sarah run out of their home, following Shep, who was running over to us.

When they get here, Sarah takes one look before barking at Will to call the vet. She then coax's Sunset to get up, and Sunset does, limping. She lays down in the grass next to the hole and wait for the horse doctor to arrive.

The rest of the horses, other than Sunshine and Sundance, are lead into their stalls.

"It looks bad." I hear the vet say. "Broken. It'll take a long time to heal, if it does heal." Shana and Brianna had gathered in the paddock, listening to the doctors words.

"We can try and let it heal....right?"

"It would not be advised." The vet says honestly, "To much pain for Sunset. It would be best to put her out of her misery now."

"N-no! Don't!" Sunset shrieks, tears spilling down her face. Sunshine nuzzles her, Sundance prances around her.

"See? She's in too much pain/" The vet says, pointing towards the cream colored mare. Shana and Brianna nodded slowly, excepting that they were going to lose their mare today.

"I'll go get the shots."
