Y/n stuffed her hands inside her windbreaker and shuddered, dipping her head down. Being outside felt like a live battlefield to Y/n. The cold wind would shoot live rounds of prickling ice particles onto her skin with every gust. Each one would leave her skin red and cold to the touch.
Her boyfriend, Ghiaccio, however, seemed to have the opposite reaction to the winter cold. He seemed to embrace it. Each gust of wind felt like being covered with a soft, cozy blanket, and each ice particle felt like a little kiss on his skin. Winter was his heaven as winter was her hell.
Head still down, Y/n glanced up at Ghiaccio through her brows. He had brought her out on this frigid night to a pier overseeing the Mediterranean sea below. This is not the first time they had been on this specific pier together. This is the place that they first met, first kissed, spent their first anniversary—the only difference between all those other times and now is the season. Back then, it was summer. Back then, they could do anything. Now, it is winter. Now, all they can do is stand and shiver hoping for summer to come back again.
These rising thoughts only irked Y/n on. She sighed, blowing a large, white cloud of breathe and kicked at the snow on the ground. What could he have possibly dragged her out here for?
Ghiaccio turned his gaze towards Y/n's, taking his eyes off of whatever he was entranced with in the distance. He gave her a raised eyebrow. She gave him a little squint of the eyes, then looked off to the water, pretending to see something as enticing as he did out there. This only made his slight confusion turn into a slight annoyance.
"Fuck's your problem?"
Y/n crossed her arms and tilted her head his direction still keeping her eyes on the water, "No, nothing, nothing. There's nothing the matter. It's just you know..." She kept her voice casual and relaxed yet condescending enough to spark a reaction.
"You know what?" Ghiaccio asked bluntly, not catching the mild patronization Y/n sprinkled on her words.
"Well, it's just...a little cold, I guess." Y/n shivered slightly and looked him in the eyes, "Brrrr, yeah, why'd we come out anyway?" she asked with a gentle innocence. She forced a majority of her spite to suppress itself.
Ghiaccio blinked at her blankly. This made Y/n feel a little uneasy. She didn't know if he was processing what she just asked or was about to blow up on her like the ticking time bomb he was. Usually when he's upset, Y/n can predict when he'd bellyache about the issue, but there were certain times where it would hit her like a freight train. Y/n was never the confrontational type like Ghiaccio was and fortunately, none of his freak-outs were ever directed at her. He just liked to vent out his frustrations, and she didn't mind being his leverage. She felt they balanced each other out pretty well.
Eventually Ghiaccio let out a steamy exhale. Y/n felt some weight lift off of her shoulders.
"Well, damn, Y/n, I can't control the weather, first of all!" Ghiaccio stated in a rush, "And second...let me show you."
Ghiaccio walked over, wrapped an arm around Y/n's shoulders, and dragged her back over to his spot. Under his arm, she felt some of the cold fade away. For how cold he was, he could truly be warm, and his blankety grasp exemplified that. A thin smile crept itself on her lips, but it was hidden by her jacket.
Ghiaccio brought Y/n to the edge of the pier and stood against her back. One arm was used to cling on to her like a koala on tree and the other to point out towards the sea. Y/n could feel his warmth everywhere and was as much pleased as she was curious of what he was trying to show her. Glancing back at him, he looked like a determined pirate. He was looking out into the horizon, hand over his brows, the night breeze ruffling his sky blue curls. A small smirk was also plastered on his lips; an expression rarely seen on the usual grouchy, stoic man.
"When you look out there, what do you see?" He leaned his head over her shoulder and glanced at her profile. His breath warmed the side of her cheek.
"Umm..." She peered out into the beyond, "Well, I see...water, water...more water-"
"Girl, no! Out there!" Ghiaccio grabbed her head and readjusted her gaze, "When you look out there," Ghiaccio pointed at the horizon aggressively, "now, what do you see?"
Squinting, Y/n could make out something in the distance. It was a blur, a bobbing blur. She squinted even harder but couldn't quite make the thing out. It didn't help it was past sunset too. The luminescence from the moon and stars were the only light sources available.
"Shit, Ghia, I can't even see it—"
"SHSHSHSHSH! Just-just wait and it'll come into view, trust me."
Ghiaccio was growing more and more impatient by the second. Y/n could hear the reverberation of his foot tapping on the ground and the occasional swear spilling out underneath his breath. He tapped his fingers alongside her head too, which was annoying, but she was too focused on the mysterious bobbing thing to care.
Y/n squinted her eyes one last time and leaned in towards the water. What she saw brightened her eyes and stretched a grin as far and wide as her face could let it. She whipped around and gleamed at Ghiaccio who looked a bit bashful at first glance but quickly straightened up.
"It—! The fuckin' thing—! It says—!" She spun back around and peered into the sea again. There amidst the dark waves sat a large iceberg carved into the words, 'Will you marry me, Y/n?' in big, bold letters.
"Will you, Y/n?" She turned around again and stared in awe at Ghiaccio. Despite the darkness, she could see remnants of a heavy blush painted on his cheeks. And it was not just from the cold.
Ghiaccio scratched the back of his neck and looked to the side, "I mean...I know you're gonna ask this, but I didn't get a ring or anything because you know how much those stupid things cost? Too much! These cheap, fucking jewelers just want to rob you blind for a just some dumbass marriage and—" His eyes widened and he coughed, "Oh, fuck...shit, I didn't mean—! Oh, shit! No, for fucks sake! I—"
"Ah! Just shut up! Shut up and come here!" Y/n jumped into Ghiaccio's blabbering arms, swung her arms around his neck, and kissed him. She kissed him on the lips, then all over his face like a woodpecker, then back to his lips.
"I love you so much, Y/n." Ghiaccio whispered in her ear after pulling away from their kiss, "And I want—I need you to know that. That I love you."
Y/n smiled and dipped her head down bashfully, "I love you too, Ghia-bear."
There was a long silence.
"...'Ghia-bear'?"
"Uh-huh!" Y/n giggled. She knew what she was doing.
Ghiaccio groaned and massaged his temples, "Ugh! You know I hate those fucking nasty-ass, corny-ass, pet-names! God, they make me want to die! Fuck, whoever came up with them can suck my big, fat—!"
Y/n's giggling grew into laughter and Ghiaccio stopped his tangent just to listen to it. To him it was almost like hearing an angel sing. To him, Y/n was the closest thing to an angel he could find on this Earth and it filled him with peace.
A peace he always desired but never received until now.
All of his anger faded away in an instant and he was left a man with a big smile on his face.
A smile that could only be possible with true love's help.
