Damian had found out about the relationship.
He knew that he shouldn't have, and the truth is, he wouldn't have seen it at all if it weren't for a sudden change in his lunchtime plan.
He didn't want to go to waste his lunchtime helping at the Dandy Cram booth, but his friend Amelia had urged him to many times.
It was boring work, and Damian did not enjoy it at all, the unpleasant experience of working in retail; he would have rather spent his time on the soccer field playing with balls and men.
Being so disinterested in his job, Damian wanted to slack off, and so he sat down on the ground, not far from where the stall he was supposed to work.
He had made five sales already and so, he decided, it was time for a short break.
He lay down on the soft concrete and bathed himself in the autumn wind.
He felt the beams of sunlight gently warm his face; it was one of the feelings that he loved most in the world.
Damian wondered if he could get a tan if he stayed under this sun for long enough, but he concluded that the chances of getting skin cancer were far more likely.
Yet even the thought of skin cancer wasn't enough to remove him from his place under the sun. To him it felt like nothing could remove him from his own little spot under the sun...
His thoughts were interrupted when a young child running by almost ran over him, and then proceeded to almost trample him again in a fit of panic.
Even though Damian wasn't hurt at all, the shock was enough to make him stand up and send him running back towards the Dandy-Cram stall.
When he gets there, he finds that everyone was already getting ready to pack up, and the last batch of customers were just beginning to leave.
He goes to find Amelia, but is distracted when he sees two of his friends, Jamie and Kayden, walking side-by-side.
Well, to Damian, Kayden is more than just a friend, and that's a secret that nobody knows except for Jamie and the boy himself.
He had been madly in love with Kayden for months now, but not once was he able to advance the relationship.
The best he could do was talk to Jamie every time he passed Jamie around the school.
Jamie definitely knows why he's doing it, but he's used to it at this point, and so the two just act like they're normal friends, even though they both know what's going on.
And neither of them let each other know of this, but secretly, they were both waiting for the other people to make a move.
Damian smiled slightly at how close Jamie and Kayden were standing together.
Even though their hands were clearly apart, the way that they were positioned next to each other made it almost impossible to see the two without imagining them together, Damian quickly remembers his affiliation with Jamie and straightens his smirk, for Jamie is to be his and only his.
After adjusting his sport uniform a little bit, Damian runs up behind Jamie and slaps his back, not too hard but with enough force to make Jamie turn around and look at him.
Damian was about to laugh at the expression on Jamie's face when a loud noise surprised both him and Jamie, the sound of something hitting the ground.
They turn around to see that Kayden had dropped a box of chocolates that he had been holding this entire time.
He quickly bends down to pick it up and he and Jamie immediately open the box to examine the chocolates, just in case they were somehow messed up by the fall.
Damian, however, did not care about the chocolates.
He cared more about where Jamie had gotten the box of chocolates from.
The box of chocolates that was the most expensive tier of candy-packs, or Dandies, as they were known, and so there were only three types of people who would get them: people who wanted to get them for themselves, people who wanted to get them for a love interest, and lastly, people who wanted to get them for a really really close friend.
Firstly, Kayden was not the type of person to buy candies for himself, as he had always been reluctant to buy, according to him, the "overpriced scams" that the school offered.
Secondly, Kayden had just received the text message break-up treatment from his previous and first girlfriend and then went on to come out as gay, so it's quite unlikely that he would already be involved in any romances.
The mystery of the chocolate spun in Damian's head like a maths equation, and admittedly, Damian was terrible at maths.
Yet, it felt like he had already solved the equation and now only needed to verify it.
By now, Kayden and Jamie had finished with the cleaning and both of their eyes were on Damian. So Damian asked Kayden:
"By the way, where did you get those chocolates from?"
Kayden looked at him, somewhat confused by the sudden question.
"Umm... I got this for him..." Kayden pointed to Jamie, who was standing right next to him.
"Oh, we're not like, dating or anything, we're just friends," he added, after noticing a strange change in Damian's expression, one that was subtle but certainly hid a more complicated emotion within.
Damian kept calm on the outside, but inside, he felt his heart drop.
Kayden and Jamie were more than friends—he was sure of that.
He saw it in the way that they stood so closely together.
He saw it in the way that the two interacted.
But most importantly, he saw it as soon as he came to talk with the two, because he had already known that this would happen, sooner or later, and yet he had done nothing to prevent it.
He had been avoiding the possibility for as long as possible, only to be suddenly struck with the confirmation that, yes, the two were dating and they had been for a while.
Damian bottled up his emotions, because he knew it was no use releasing them at this point, and he didn't want to be seen as even more childish than he already was.
He knew that this was mostly his fault. He should have been the one to make a move first, and he should have been the one to buy the chocolates, for Jamie.
But now, at this point, everything that he didn't want to happen had already happened, and there was no way to reverse them whatsoever.
There was an awkward moment of silence, that none of the three people were willing to break, during which Damian finally realised how quiet he had been for the past few seconds.
Everyone had been expecting one of the other two people to break the silence, and yet nobody was willing to speak.
Damian was the first to break the silence, not by saying something, but by simply walking away from Jamie and Kayden, who had been staring at him emptily, waiting for him to maybe say something.
He didn't want to care. He didn't want to get mad at Kayden or be upset at Jamie, and he knew that there was no reason to care at all about someone else's relationships.
He wanted to just walk away and forget about all this, to go to his classes and just ignore everything about Kayden or Jamie, or anyone affiliated with them.
But inside, Damian was upset and angry and everything in between, and secretly he knew that he was not going to let this go easily.
